Mating Net

A mating net is a construction that restricts the enemy king's escape squares so thoroughly that checkmate becomes unavoidable — the king is caught in the "net" before the final blow is ever struck. The net is not the mate itself; it is everything that comes before: the squares taken away, the defenders tied down, the exits sealed. What Is a Mating Net?

Checkmate is a single move. A mating net is a state of the position — an arrangement of your pieces (and often the opponent's own pieces, working against their king) in which the king has nowhere to run, so that the finishing check, whenever it lands, cannot be answered. The king's escape squares are called flight squares, and the art of the net is reducing their number to zero while the defender is unable to fix the problem.

A net can exist for many moves before the mate happens — sometimes no immediate check is even needed, and the opponent resigns or sheds decisive material to break out. Nor does a net require extra force: two or three coordinated attackers against a cornered king routinely outweigh an extra piece stranded on the other wing, which is why attacking players give up material so freely near the enemy king.

Checks Chase, Nets Catch

Here is the pattern I see in nearly every beginner's games: they reach a winning attack, then they check, and check, and check — and the enemy king walks calmly across the board to safety. Every check forces the king to move, and a moving king is often a king escaping. Strong players do something that looks paradoxical: with the enemy king in danger, they play a quiet move — no check at all — that takes away an escape square or adds an attacker. Only when the net is closed does the forcing sequence begin.

This is exactly the logic behind zugzwang technique in basic endings. In king-and-rook versus king, the winning method is to build a shrinking box around the enemy king and then make a waiting move, letting the king step into the fatal position on its own — chasing with checks is precisely how beginners let it slip out. So make this your rule: the net precedes the mate. Before calculating any check, ask where the king goes afterward — if the answer is "somewhere safer," find the move that removes the escape route instead.

The Anatomy of a Mating Net

Every mating net, from a two-move back-rank trick to a twenty-move king hunt, has the same three components.

1. The escape squares are covered. Each flight square is attacked by one of your pieces, occupied by one of the defender's own pieces, or blocked by the edge of the board. The board edge and the defender's pawns are your silent partners — a castled king's pawn shield protects against frontal attack but also walls the king in, the seed of every back-rank disaster.

2. The defenders are neutralized. A net is only real if the opponent cannot cut it. Defenders that could block the final check, capture the mating piece, or open an escape hatch must be exchanged, deflected, pinned, or overloaded. Most "missed mates" at club level are not missed geometry — they are miscounted defenders.

3. The executioner is ready. One piece must be able to deliver the final check on a square the king cannot answer. Often it does nothing else: it waits on its firing line while the quiet moves close the net.

When all three are in place, the position is decided. When only two are, you have an attack, not yet a net — and the move to look for is the one that supplies the missing component.

Classic Net Patterns Every Player Should Know

The named checkmate patterns are really named nets — reusable geometries of covered squares. Learn them as nets, and you will see them coming many moves earlier.

  • The back-rank mate is the purest example of the opponent's own pieces forming the net: the pawn shield on f7, g7, h7 seals the king on the eighth rank, and a single rook or queen executes.
  • The smothered mate takes this to its extreme — the king's own pieces occupy every flight square in the corner, and a knight, whose attack cannot be blocked, delivers mate. The classic finish Qg8+ Rxg8 Nf7# even forces the defender to tighten his own net.
  • Anastasia's mate is a rook-and-knight net against a castled king: a knight on e7 covers g8 and g6, a queen sacrifice on h7 drags the king onto the h-file, and the rook executes along it.
  • Boden's mate is the crisscross net: two bishops on intersecting diagonals cover the escape squares of a queenside-castled king — whose own rook and pawns block the rest.
  • The Arabian mate — the oldest recorded pattern — nets the corner with rook and knight: the knight on f6 guards g8 and supports the rook's mate on h7.
  • The epaulette mate and the dovetail mate are queen-net geometry: in the first, the king's own rooks flank it like epaulettes, blocking both lateral escapes while the queen mates from in front; in the second, two of the defender's pieces occupy the diagonal flight squares while the queen mates from beside the king.

Notice the recurring theme: in almost every named pattern, half the net is built from the defender's own pieces. Your job is usually not to cover eight squares — it is to cover the two or three the opponent has not already blocked for you.

The King Hunt: A Net on the Run

Not every net is built around a stationary king. In a king hunt, you drag the king out of its shelter and rebuild the net around it square by square as it runs — and a single inaccurate check lets the prey escape forever.

The most famous modern example is Kasparov vs. Topalov, Wijk aan Zee 1999. With the stunning rook sacrifice 24.Rxd4, Kasparov pulled Black's king from the safety of a7 into a forced march across the board — through White's own territory — before the net finally closed. What makes the game immortal is the calculation: Kasparov had to see, many moves ahead, that at every fork in the road the king's flight squares were covered. A king hunt is a mating net calculated in motion.

The deepest of them all may be Polugaevsky vs. Nezhmetdinov, Sochi 1958. Nezhmetdinov sacrificed his queen to drag White's king up the board into the heart of Black's position, where pawns and minor pieces wove the net without her. It is my favorite demonstration that a net is about coverage, not force: the king was surrounded by cheap material sitting on exactly the squares that mattered.

Building Nets in Practical Play

In your own games, nets are built with two kinds of moves. The first is the quiet move that cuts a square: a pawn advance that takes away f6, a bishop retreat that keeps covering h7, a rook lift that seals a rank. These moves look slow, but they are the fastest attacking moves on the board, because they make every subsequent check stronger.

The second kind is the sacrifice that strips the shield. The Greek gift — Bxh7+ followed by Ng5+ and Qh5 — is the canonical example: a bishop is invested to demolish the pawn cover and drag the king onto a square where the follow-up pieces can weave the net around it. Every such sacrifice comes down to the net question: after the shield is gone, can the arriving pieces cover the flight squares, or does the king slip through the hole you just made? If you cannot answer concretely, the sacrifice is a hope, not a combination.

One more habit: bring the last attacker before you commit. Nets fail by one tempo more often than by one piece — if a rook lift or knight hop adds a genuine attacker without allowing a refutation, play it first; the sacrifice will usually still be there next move, and it will work better.

Spotting Nets — and Slipping Out of Them

The detection skill is simple enough to make a habit: count the enemy king's flight squares on every move of an attack. Three or more — you are still maneuvering. One or two — start calculating forcing lines. Zero — every check you can deliver is a mate candidate, and every quiet threat may be unanswerable. The same count works in reverse: when your own king's flight squares hit zero, treat it as a fire alarm.

Defensively, the standard prophylaxis against the most common net is making luft — a pawn move like h3 or g3 that gives your king an escape hatch before the back rank becomes a coffin. The second tool is exchanging the netting pieces: a net needs coordination, and trading off the attacker's key knight or bishop often collapses the whole construction. When defending, I value enemy pieces by their role in the net, not their point count — the modest knight covering the two critical squares is the piece I want gone, not the distant rook.

Common Mistakes When Weaving a Net

Checking the king to safety. The classic error, worth restating: a check that lets the king step toward the center or its remaining defenders has made your attack worse. Check only when you know where the king lands and why that square is worse than the current one.

Miscounting the defenders. The geometry looks perfect, you sacrifice — and a defender you dismissed captures the executioner or blocks with tempo. Before committing material, list every enemy piece that can reach the mating zone in time, especially backward-moving defensive resources, the easiest moves in chess to overlook.

Building too slowly. A net is a race. Every quiet move you invest is a tempo your opponent spends on counterplay elsewhere, and an attack that arrives one move late loses to one that arrives on time. The judgment call — one more preparing move, or strike now — is the hardest in attacking chess, and the honest answer comes from calculation, not mood.
