Discovered Attack (and Discovered Check)

A discovered attack is a chess tactic in which moving one piece unmasks an attack from a second piece that was standing behind it on the same line; when the unmasked piece attacks the king, it is a discovered check. One move, two pieces doing damage: the piece that moves and the piece that is revealed. Of all the basic tactics, this is the one my students find hardest to see coming, and the one that produces the most spectacular finishes when it lands.

What Is a Discovered Attack?

Set up the machine in your mind: my rook stands on e1, my own knight on e4 blocks its view up the file, and Black's queen sits on e7. Nothing is attacked yet. Now the knight jumps anywhere, and the rook suddenly attacks the queen. That is the entire mechanism: a front piece, a rear line piece, and a move that opens the line between the rear piece and its target.

What makes the discovered attack vicious is that the front piece did not just get out of the way, it got out of the way and went somewhere. It can capture something, attack something, or give check, all while the rear piece delivers its own threat. Two pieces, two threats, one move: the discovered attack is the two-piece version of the double attack, and it obeys the same arithmetic. Your opponent gets one reply and must choose which threat survives.

Only bishops, rooks, and queens can be the rear, unmasked piece, since the tactic requires attacking along a line. But any piece or pawn can be the front piece, and knights and pawns are the best of all: a knight leaps to squares no line piece controls, and a pawn is so cheap that whatever it attacks must respond. The Battery: Loading the Gun

Strong players do not stumble into discovered attacks; they build them. The prepared version, two of your pieces deliberately stacked on one line with the front one ready to fire, is closely related to the battery. A bishop on b2 with a knight in front on e5, aimed at the enemy king's diagonal, is a loaded gun: every knight move is a potential discovered attack, which means the knight is temporarily allowed to do outrageous things.

This is the concept I most want club players to absorb: a front piece backed by a discovered threat becomes immune to normal rules. It can land on defended squares, because capturing it opens the line behind. It can attack the queen from a square where the queen could normally just take it. When you see a protected enemy piece sitting insolently where it "cannot" go, look behind it; there is usually a mask about to slip.

Building the battery costs a move or two, which is why discovered attacks reward planners. Ask on every turn: which of my line pieces could attack something valuable if one square opened? Then ask what it costs to occupy that square with the right front piece. This habit, more than any calculation, is what makes tactical players look prophetic.

Discovered Check: The Front Piece Moves for Free

Now promote the rear piece's threat to the maximum: let the unmasked piece give check. This is the discovered check, and it changes the logic of the position completely.

A check must be answered immediately. So whatever the front piece does on its journey, capture a rook, fork two pieces, park itself on a mating square, your opponent cannot respond to it this move; the king comes first. In effect, the front piece gets a free move. Chess players have a saying that the discovered check is the dive-bomber of the chessboard, and the image is apt: the front piece swoops, grabs, and the defender can do nothing until the check is addressed, by which time the damage is done.

The most extreme case is when the front piece also gives check from its new square: two checks at once, a double check, against which capturing and blocking are both impossible and only a king move is legal. The Windmill: Discovered Check on Repeat

If one discovered check gives the front piece a free move, a mechanism that produces discovered checks repeatedly gives you free moves in series, and that is the windmill, the most violent material-winning machine in chess.

The canonical example is Torre against Lasker, Moscow 1925. Torre's bishop stood on f6, his rook reached g7, and the black king on h8 could only shuffle: the rook captured along the seventh rank with discovered check from the bishop, returned to g7 with a direct check, and repeated the cycle, devouring material on each revolution while Lasker's replies were forced throughout. You will rarely get a full windmill in your own games, but two-turn versions, one discovered check to grab a piece and a return with check to restore the position, appear regularly in tactics puzzles and in real play. Once you have the pattern, you will find the small windmills hiding in positions where you would previously have seen nothing.

Spotting and Preventing Discovered Attacks

Both halves of this skill, using the weapon and not walking into it, come from the same scanning habit: notice the alignments.

On attack, inventory every line where one of your bishops, rooks, or queens stands behind one of your own pieces, aimed at something valuable. Each such line is a half-built discovered attack; the question is only whether the front piece has a destination that creates a worthwhile second threat. Checks and captures first, as always. If the rear piece's target is the king, any front-piece move is close to winning, so calculate them all.

On defense, be suspicious of enemy pieces lined up behind each other pointing at your king or queen, even with blockers in between; lines open in one move. The standard prophylactic measures are cheap: step the king off the shared diagonal or file before it matters, challenge or trade the rear line piece, or fix the front piece in place with a pin of your own so the mask cannot move. Removing the defender that keeps the line closed is your opponent's plan too, so watch for deflection and decoy sacrifices whose only purpose is to open the masked line. And remember the reverse warning from the pin article: a piece you have "pinned" relatively may leap out anyway if its move unleashes a discovered threat bigger than what it abandons.

Discovered Attacks in Practice

Where does this tactic actually appear in club games? Three recurring scenes. First, the opening accident: one side castles into a half-open file or long diagonal, an enemy knight or pawn stands in front of the aiming piece, and a routine capture suddenly comes with discovered check, winning a queen that had wandered onto the wrong line. Several well-known opening traps are exactly this, which is why experienced players sense danger the moment their queen shares any line with an enemy rook or bishop, blockers or not.

Second, the central pawn push. A pawn advancing in the center attacks a piece while opening the diagonal of the bishop behind it: the humblest discovered attack and among the most common. In my own tournament practice, checking whether a central pawn advance uncovers anything, for me or against me, is part of how I evaluate every pawn break, and I teach students to fold that check into their routine when calculating breaks.

Third, the endgame version: a king move that unmasks a rook, winning a tempo in a race, or a knight that lifts off a file at the exact moment the rook behind it traps the enemy king on the back rank, a motif that often ends in a back-rank mate. Discovered attacks do not retire when the queens come off; they just get quieter.
