The bishop is not winning a pawn; it is selling itself to buy three things. First, it strips the king's shield. Second, it drags the king onto h7, one square further from safety and into the path of every check that follows. Third — and this is the point club players miss — it wins tempo: because the capture is check, the attacker's slower pieces get to join the hunt for free.

The Standard Mechanism: Bxh7+, Ng5+, Qh5
The main line runs: 1.Bxh7+ Kxh7 2.Ng5+ and now, after the most natural retreat 2...Kg8, comes 3.Qh5, threatening Qh7 mate — a mate supported by the knight on g5. Look at the division of labor:
- The bishop opened the door and disappeared. Its work is done.
- The knight on g5 is the pivot of everything: it attacks h7 and f7, supports the queen's arrival, and cannot be tolerated or easily evicted.
- The queen on h5 delivers the actual threats. Together with the knight she forms the queen-and-knight attacking duo — the same partnership that powers the smothered mate — and against a bare king that duo is usually decisive.
- The pawn on e5 is the silent hero: it denies f6 to Black's pieces, so the one natural blocking and defending square in front of the king belongs to White.
Against the immediate mate threat Black has few tries. The defense ...Re8, freeing f8 for the king, is met by Qxf7+ and the attack crashes on with the king dragged into the open. Blocking tries on the h-file do not exist — the file is not the problem, h7 is. And a defending piece capturing on g5 must be checked concretely: if the queen can safely take the knight, the whole sacrifice was unsound (more on this below); if a bishop takes, the attacker must have a strong recapture or follow-up ready before ever playing Bxh7+.

The Three King Retreats
After 1.Bxh7+ Kxh7 2.Ng5+, the defending king has three squares, and a serious attacker calculates all three before the first capture.
2...Kg8 — the natural retreat. The main line above: 3.Qh5 with the mate threat on h7. This is the branch where the attacker's checklist (next section) decides everything. If the checklist is green, the attack is winning or close to it; at minimum, attackers should verify they have at least a draw by perpetual check in hand if a defense holds.
2...Kg6 — the brave march. The critical test, and the branch that refutes lazy sacrifices. Typical attacking resources are Qd3+ (the queen replacing the vanished bishop on the same diagonal), Qg4 with threats against the wandering king, and the pawn lever h4–h5+ prying the king further open, a miniature pawn storm with the king as the target. These lines are sharp and must be calculated move by move. My honest rule for students: if you cannot demonstrate a concrete punishment of ...Kg6, you are not allowed to play Bxh7+.
2...Kh6 — the walk into the woods. Usually the fastest loss. The king attacks the g5-knight, but the knight has a devastating reply available in many positions: Nxf7+, a fork hitting the king on h6 and the queen on d8 — note that a knight on f7 attacks both — collecting decisive material. Add Qg4 and Qd2+ ideas against a king stranded on h6, and this retreat rarely survives. Verify the details, but expect to win this branch.
Declining the gift. Black can also refuse: 1.Bxh7+ Kh8. Now the attacker has simply won a pawn and shattered the shield, and the bishop often retreats with profit. Declining is occasionally the best practical chance, but it concedes a stable advantage — which tells you something important: a correct Greek gift offers the defender only a choice of ways to suffer.
The Attacker's Checklist: When It Works
Before every Bxh7+ in your life, run these six checks. This is the discipline that separates a sacrifice from a donation.
- Is Ng5+ safe and stable? The knight must reach g5 with check, and no black piece may capture it with impunity. The killer question: can the black queen take on g5? A queen on d8 with a clear path along the d8–g5 diagonal (nothing on e7 or f6) simply eats the knight and the attack dies. This single oversight refutes more Greek gifts than everything else combined.
- Can your queen join fast? She needs a clean road to h5, g4, or d3. If the queen takes three moves to arrive, the defender consolidates and your bishop is a memory.
- Is f6 denied to the defender? The move ...Nf6, blocking the queen's path and covering h7 and g4, is the classical refutation. Your e5-pawn (or a piece controlling f6) must make it impossible. This is why the sacrifice is thematic in the French Defense and similar structures where e5 stands like a wedge.
- Can any defender reach the kingside in time? Count the rescuers: a knight on d7 can reroute to f8, covering h7; a bishop may reach f5 or g6 to block the b1–h7 diagonal; a queen may defend along the third rank. Each arriving defender must cost the defense a tempo you use to bring your own reserves.
- What do you have against ...Kg6? The non-negotiable branch. No concrete answer, no sacrifice.
- What is your minimum guaranteed outcome? The professional's question. Best case, mate or decisive material; but also check the floor — often the attacker can bail out into perpetual check with the queen. A sacrifice with mate upside and a draw floor is a great practical bet. A sacrifice that either mates or loses must be calculated to the very end.
Notice what is not on the checklist: intuition, courage, or the opponent's rating. The Greek gift is one of the most concrete decisions in chess. It rewards accountants, not gamblers.
When It Fails: The Defender's Resources
Now flip the board, because every kingside castler eats at this restaurant eventually. The sacrifice fails when the defense has one of the following — memorize them as your survival kit:
- ...Qxg5 or ...Bxg5. If your queen or bishop guards g5, the knight check is a blunder, not a brilliancy. Keeping the d8–g5 diagonal clear is invisible prophylaxis against the whole pattern.
- The ...Nf6 block. A knight able to land on f6 defends h7, blocks the diagonal, and hits the queen on h5. This is why trading off or advancing past your f6-knight should always trigger the question: "is Bxh7+ in the air now?"
- The ...Kg6 survival march. Unpleasant to play but frequently correct. If the attacker's forces are not fully mobilized, the king walks out and the material decides.
- Rescuers in range. ...Nd7–f8 covering h7, ...Bf5 or ...Bg6 blocking the diagonal, ...Re8 freeing f8 at the right moment. Count your defenders of h7 before you assume you need none.
- Structural insurance. A fianchetto with ...g6 makes the sacrifice pointless before it exists — there is no h7-pawn story when the bishop's diagonal is blunted — and a timely ...h6 asks the g5-question one move early. Even simple luft decisions change the pattern's arithmetic.
The meta-lesson for defenders: the Greek gift is not something you refute over the board at move twenty; it is something you price into every decision from the moment of castling. When your f6-knight leaves its post, when your queen abandons the g5-diagonal, when a bishop lines up on your h7 — the alarm should ring then.
Greek Gift in Practice
Where does the pattern actually decide games? Three scenes I see constantly in student games and my own tournament practice.
The French and Queen's-pawn structures. Positions with a white pawn wedge on e5 — the French advance structures, certain Colle and London setups — are the sacrifice's natural habitat, because condition three of the checklist (f6 denied) comes built into the pawn structure. If you play these openings from either side, the Greek gift is not one tactic among many; it is the central tactical question of the middlegame, and I treat it that way when I prepare these structures with students.
The half-remembered sacrifice. The most common club-level tragedy: a player remembers "Bxh7+ is a thing," fires it in a position where the black queen guards g5 or ...Nf6 is available, and resigns ten moves later. The pattern's fame is a trap for attackers too. Run the checklist — the whole checklist — every time.
The defender's payday. The happiest moments are on the other side: an opponent sacrifices unsoundly, you calmly find ...Kg6 or ...Qxg5 because you know the survival kit, and you convert the extra piece. Defensive knowledge of this pattern wins more rating points than attacking knowledge, simply because unsound Greek gifts outnumber sound ones at club level.
