The white queen gives check from e5, diagonally adjacent to the king. Now walk the king's escape squares one by one, because the coverage is a small masterpiece of queen geometry:
- c5 and d5 — covered by the queen along the fifth rank.
- e6 and e7 — covered by the queen up the e-file.
- c7 — the subtle one. It sits on the same diagonal as the check (e5–d6–c7), so the king fleeing there would still be in check: the queen's attack passes through the square the king vacates. This is x-ray coverage, and forgetting it is why defenders miscount this mate.
- c6 and d7 — the only two squares the queen does not touch... and they are occupied by Black's own pawn and queen. The tail feathers.
- e5 itself — the king would love to capture the checking queen, and this is why the dovetail, unlike the epaulette, strictly requires the queen to be protected. Here the d4-pawn does the job.
Count the division of labor: the queen covers five squares (two by rank, two by file, one by x-ray), a single humble defender protects her, and the victim's own pieces seal the last two exits. The blockers c6 and d7 sit on the two squares adjacent to the king that spread away from the checking diagonal — plot them and you will see the forked tail that named the pattern.
One more detail worth savoring: the most common tail feathers in real games are the defender's own queen and a pawn. A queen on d7 guarding its king from the most natural square, a pawn on c6 from a Caro-Kann or Slav structure — both utterly normal, both fatal. The saddest version, which I have seen many times in student games, is the defending queen as a tail feather: the piece that could have saved the king is the piece imprisoning it.
The Canonical Sequence
The dovetail has no fixed combination, but the standard finish is a two-step herd-and-strike. A typical schematic: Black king on e7, queen on d7, rook on e8, bishop still on f8, pawns on c6, e6 and f7 — a battered but plausible defensive setup. White: queen on g3, pawn on d4.
- Qg5+ — check along the g5–e7 diagonal. Watch Black's replies disappear: e8, e6, d7, f8 and f7 are all occupied by Black's own pieces; f6 is covered by the checking queen; and d8 is an illusion — it sits on the very diagonal the queen is checking along, so the moment the king steps off e7 the g5–d8 line opens and the king is still in check. Only one legal move: 1...Kd6.
- Qe5# — the queen slides to the diagonally adjacent square, protected by the d4-pawn, and the canonical geometry from above appears on the board: rank, file, x-ray, and two tail feathers. Mate.
The instructive part is move one: the king was not chased into the net by brilliance but by its own crowd. Every dovetail arises this way — checks that look escapable until you notice how many replies the defender's own pieces have already spent.

Queen endings, first and everywhere. This is the dovetail's native habitat. The flushed king. In middlegame attacks, a king dragged out of its shelter — after a sacrifice on f7 or e6, say — flees through a crowd of its own defenders. Attackers should know the dovetail as a destination: when you are calculating a king hunt and your checks seem to run out, look for the geometry — is there a protected diagonal-touch square from which rank, file, and x-ray seal everything except two self-blocked squares? Then only two questions remain: can my queen reach that square with check, and can I protect it (or is it already protected)? A pawn, a king, a knight — any guard converts the arrival from a spite check into mate. Herding checks, as in the canonical sequence, often force the king onto the fatal square precisely because its own pieces eliminate every alternative.
For the defender, the rules are the mirror image, and in queen endings they are close to survival law:
- Advance your king with empty squares around it. Two free neighbors is the magic number: with fewer than two, some named mate — dovetail, epaulette, or their cousins — is usually one protected check away. Before each king step in a queen ending, glance at how many exits the destination square keeps.
- Beware your own queen as bodyguard. A defending queen standing adjacent to its king guards squares but occupies one — and the dovetail specifically exploits the d7-style guard post. Where possible, defend from a distance, along lines rather than from adjacent squares.
- Respect the x-ray. When checked diagonally by a queen, cross off the entire diagonal — including the square behind you — before counting your escapes. The classic dovetail blunder is calculating "I'll just step back along the line."
