- List your dream threats. What would you play if the opponent's defense didn't exist — which mate, which capture, which promotion?
- For each dream, name the veto. Exactly which enemy piece prevents it? Most "impossible" threats are vetoed by precisely one defender; multi-defender targets are usually not worth the effort.
- Audit the veto piece. Can it be captured — and does the recapture actually restore the defense? Is it overloaded — count all its duties? Can it be deflected with a threat it must answer? Does its protection travel along a blockable line?
- Price the operation. Guard removal often costs material up front (the sacrificed deflector, the surrendered bishop pair). Confirm the target is worth more than the toll, and check the sequence for enemy zwischenzugs.
This algorithm also runs in reverse as defense. When your position depends on a single guard, you are one tactic away from collapse — the defensive rule of thumb is that every critical duty deserves either two defenders or a defender that cannot be attacked, and rearranging your pieces to obey that rule before anything is threatened is prophylaxis in its most concrete form. Most middlegame collapses I see in student games trace back to one overworked piece that had been quietly holding everything for the last ten moves; the loser usually never knew which piece it was.
