Pin

A pin is a chess tactic in which a piece cannot move, or should not move, because it is shielding a more valuable piece behind it on the same line. It is the quietest of the basic tactics: a fork wins material this move, while a pin wins the game slowly, by paralyzing a defender. When I review students' games, mishandled pins, on both sides of them, are among the most common turning points I find.

What Is a Pin?

Picture three units standing on one line: my long-range piece at one end, an enemy piece in the middle, and a more valuable enemy piece behind it. The middle piece is pinned. If it steps aside, the piece behind it falls. It is stuck doing guard duty, and a piece stuck on guard duty has lost most of its powers.

Only the three line-moving pieces can pin: the bishop along diagonals, the rook along ranks and files, and the queen along both. A knight can never pin anything, because it does not attack through a line, and the same goes for pawns and kings. This is worth internalizing, because it tells you exactly where pins come from: open lines pointing at your king and queen.

Two everyday examples from the openings you already play. In the Nimzo-Indian, after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Bb4, Black's bishop pins the knight on c3 against the king on e1: the knight cannot legally move, and White's control of the central squares suffers for it. And in countless queen's pawn openings, a bishop on g5 pins a knight on f6 against the queen on d8, taking the defender of the central light squares out of the game.

Absolute and Relative Pins

Not all pins bind equally, and the distinction is the first thing to check whenever you see one.

An absolute pin is a pin against the king. Moving the pinned piece would expose the king to capture, so the move is simply illegal. The piece is frozen by the rules themselves. The Nimzo-Indian bishop on b4 creates an absolute pin: the c3-knight cannot move at all.

A relative pin is a pin against anything else, most often the queen or a rook. Here the pinned piece may move legally, it just usually costs material to do so. The word "usually" is where games are won and lost. A relative pin is a threat, not a law, and strong players constantly test whether the pinned piece can jump out anyway.

The most famous demonstration is the centuries-old Légal's mate pattern: White's knight on f3 appears pinned by a bishop on g4 against the queen on d1, but the knight captures on e5 regardless, because if Black greedily takes the queen, White's minor pieces deliver a forced mate around the exposed king. I show this pattern to every student, not for the trap itself but for the mindset: before you rely on a relative pin, ask what happens if your opponent ignores it. And before you assume you are stuck, ask whether breaking the pin unleashes a discovered attack of your own.

How to Exploit a Pin

A pin by itself rarely wins material. The profit comes from what you do to the immobilized piece. Three methods cover almost every case.

Pile up on it. A pinned piece cannot run, so bring more attackers than it has defenders. The classical picture is a knight on f6 pinned by a bishop on g5 while White adds a knight to d5 or e4 and, if needed, the queen behind the bishop as a battery. Count attackers and defenders: the moment attackers outnumber defenders, the piece falls.

Hit it with a pawn. This is the cheapest and most decisive method, because a pawn attacks the pinned piece while costing nothing to trade. A knight pinned on c6 against its king, with the pawn break d4-d5 coming, is losing material by force. When I annotate games, "attack the pinned piece with a pawn" is probably my most repeated marginal note.

Treat it as a non-defender. This is the deepest and most missed idea: a pinned piece defends nothing. If a knight pinned to the king is the only piece guarding a back-rank square, then a back-rank mate may already be on. If a pinned pawn is "defending" a square in front of the king, your pieces can land there as if the square were empty. Whenever you see a pin on the board, recount every square the pinned piece pretends to defend; combinations based on this illusion, often finished by deflection or overloading of the remaining defenders, are everywhere in master play.

Breaking Out of a Pin

Since you will be on the receiving end just as often, here is the defensive toolkit, roughly in order of preference.

Put the question early. Against a bishop pin like Bg5 on your f6-knight, the move h6 asks the bishop to decide: retreat along the diagonal, keeping the pin but giving you the later option of g5, or trade itself for the knight. Timing this pawn move well is a small art, but the option should always be on your radar.

Unpin by blocking or stepping out. Interpose a piece on the pin line, say a bishop on e7 behind the f6-knight, or move the valuable rear piece off the line entirely. Castling is the great unpinner: it whisks the king off the e-file before rook pins along it ever land.

Chase or trade the pinning piece. A pin evaporates the moment the pinner is captured or driven off the line.

Break it tactically. The Légal pattern again: sometimes the "pinned" piece moves anyway with a bigger threat, often check. Before assuming your piece is frozen by a relative pin, calculate the line where you simply move it.

What you should not do is ignore a pin and play on as if the piece were free. A pinned knight that sits for ten moves while its colleagues fight outnumbered is a silent material deficit.

Pins in Practice

Some scenes from the trenches. In the opening, the mirror-image pins Bg5 and Bb4 (or Bg4 and Bb5 against you) decide the fight for the center: a pinned knight neither controls central squares nor supports pawn breaks, which is why players fight so hard to unpin quickly or to keep the pin alive.

In the middlegame, watch for the pin as a prelude to other tactics. A pinned piece is the perfect fork target, since it cannot flee, and piling on a pinned piece often provokes weakening pawn moves around the king even when the piece survives. Rook pins along a half-open file against the queen are a recurring theme; the pinned defender in front of the queen becomes a magnet for pawn storms.

In the endgame, the deadliest version is the pin against the promotion square: a rook pinning a passed pawn from behind, or a bishop pinning a pawn diagonally so it can never queen. And a warning from my own tournament practice: in queen endgames, always check whether your queen is stepping onto a line with her king, because a pin there often trades queens by force and can turn a winning pawn race into a dead draw. The pin's straight-line cousin, the skewer, haunts the same endgames with the pieces in the opposite order.

What is the difference between a pin and a skewer?

Both are straight-line tactics with two enemy pieces on one line, but the order is reversed. In a pin, the less valuable piece stands in front, shielding the more valuable one behind it, so the front piece is frozen. In a skewer, the more valuable piece stands in front, must move when attacked, and exposes the cheaper piece behind it to capture.

Can a knight or a pawn pin a piece?

No. Pinning requires attacking through a piece along a line, so only bishops, rooks, and queens can pin. Knights, pawns, and kings attack individual squares rather than lines. Knights are, however, frequent victims of pins, and frequent beneficiaries: a knight is often the piece that piles up on an enemy piece pinned by your bishop or rook.

Is it illegal to move a pinned piece?

Only in an absolute pin, where the piece shields its own king; moving it would expose the king to capture, which the rules forbid. In a relative pin, against a queen, rook, or anything else, moving the pinned piece is perfectly legal and occasionally brilliant, when the move creates a threat bigger than the material behind it. What is a cross-pin?

A cross-pin arises when a piece is pinned along two different lines at once, for example pinned to its king along a file by a rook and to its queen along a diagonal by a bishop. The piece is doubly paralyzed and almost always lost. Cross-pins are rare in practical play but appear regularly in composed puzzles, and solving a few teaches you how completely a pinned piece's powers can vanish.

How do I know when to break a pin with g5 or h6-style pawn moves?

Ask two questions: does chasing the bishop weaken squares my opponent can actually reach, and do I gain something concrete, like the bishop pair or freedom for my knight? Advancing the pawns in front of your castled king is a real concession, so put the question with h6 early, when the bishop must commit, and reserve the sharper g5 push for positions where the center is closed or you attack on that wing yourself.

  • Skewer — the pin's mirror image: the valuable piece in front, the cheap one behind.
  • Fork — pinned pieces, unable to flee, are the most reliable fork targets.
  • Discovered Attack (and Discovered Check) — what a relative pin risks unleashing when the pinned piece moves anyway.
  • Deflection — removes the defender of the pinned piece or of the square it pretends to guard.
  • Overloading — a pinned piece's duties fall on its neighbors, who often cannot carry them all.
  • Back-Rank Mate — the classic punishment when a pinned piece is the back rank's only guard.
