Knight

The knight is the chess piece shaped like a horse's head. It moves in an L-shape — two squares in one direction, then one square to the side — and it is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. Each player begins with two knights, worth about three pawns each. In my coaching, the knight is the piece students misjudge longest: they learn its move in a day and spend years learning where it belongs.

What Is the Knight?

White's knights start on b1 and g1; Black's on b8 and g8 — the squares between the rooks and the bishops. The knight's standard value is 3 points, the same headline number as the bishop, which is why the "knight versus bishop" question fills entire chapters of strategy books.

Let me address the name head-on, because half the people searching for this piece call it "the horse" — and they are in good company. In Spanish it is caballo (horse), in Russian kon' (steed), in Hindi ghoda (horse). English is the odd one out, naming the rider instead of the animal. If you have been calling it the horse, you have not been wrong — you have been translating. In English chess, though, say "knight," written in notation as N (K was taken by the king).

Two identity facts before we go deeper. The knight is the only piece that can legally move before any pawn has — 1.Nf3 is a respectable world-championship opening move. And it is the only piece whose check cannot be blocked: you must move the king or remove the knight.

How Does the Knight Move? The L-Shape Explained Three Ways

This is the number-one beginner confusion in chess — the knight trips up more new players than everything else in the rules of chess combined — so let me explain the same move three ways. All three describe exactly the same squares — use whichever makes it click.

Explanation 1: two plus one. The knight moves two squares along a rank or file, then one square at a right angle — two up and one across, two across and one down, any combination. From g1, a knight can go two up and one left (f3), two up and one right (h3), or two left and one up (e2).

Explanation 2: one straight, then one diagonal outward. The knight steps one square like a rook (up, down, left, or right), then one square diagonally continuing away from where it started. This version explains why the knight seems to "curve" around corners.

Explanation 3: the nearest squares nothing else reaches. From any square, find the closest squares that are not on the same rank, file, or diagonal as the knight — the nearby squares a queen standing on the knight's square could never touch. Those are exactly the knight's moves. This is my favorite definition, because it reveals the knight's role in the piece family: it covers precisely what the straight-line pieces cannot.

A knight in the open covers up to eight squares: from e4 it reaches d6, f6, g5, g3, f2, d2, c3, and c5 — a ring of squares, none adjacent to the knight itself. That gap matters: a knight never attacks the squares right next to it, which is why an enemy king can often walk straight up to a knight in the endgame and harass it safely.

And the jump. The knight is the only piece that ignores everything standing between its start and its destination. Friendly pawns, enemy queens — it leaps over all of them and only interacts with the square it lands on: an enemy piece there is captured; a piece jumped over is untouched. This is why knights are fully mobile on move one while bishops and rooks sit walled in behind pawns.

A Knight on the Rim Is Dim: Centralization, Outposts, and Closed Positions

Every strong player knows the rhyme: a knight on the rim is dim. The arithmetic is brutal. A centralized knight on e4 or d5 controls eight squares. On the edge — say a4 — it controls only four. In the corner on a1 it controls exactly two (b3 and c2). No other piece loses so much power by drifting from the center; a rook controls fourteen squares from the corner just as from the middle. The knight lives or dies by centralization.

That is why the most valuable gift you can give a knight is an outpost: a central square defended by one of your pawns that no enemy pawn can ever attack. A knight on a d5 or e5 outpost is a permanent guest — it cannot be evicted by a pawn, it radiates influence into the enemy camp, and the opponent usually must surrender a bishop for it or suffer indefinitely. When I evaluate a middlegame, "who can plant a knight where?" is one of my first questions.

Knights also have strong opinions about pawn structure. In closed positions — locked chains, blocked centers — the long-range pieces stare into concrete while the knight hops over the barricades. And knights are the best blockaders in chess: parked in front of an enemy passed pawn, a knight stops it while still attacking around it — the ideal blockade piece, as Nimzowitsch preached a century ago.

Knight Tactics: The Fork, the Smothered Mate, and the Octopus

The knight is chess's greatest fork machine. A fork by a queen announces itself along lines you can watch; a knight fork materializes out of geometry most beginners have not internalized yet, which makes it uniquely hard to see coming.

The classic is the family fork. A knight landing on c7 checks a king on e8 while attacking the rook on a8 — and if a queen stands on d5 or e6, the whole family is invited. Countless quick wins begin with a knight sneaking to b5 and crashing into c7. The mirror motif lives on f7 (or f2 for Black): a knight capturing on f7 often forks the queen on d8 and rook on h8, one reason f7 is the most attacked square in chess — entire openings, like the Fried Liver Attack, are built around ganging up on it. Whenever your king, queen, and rooks stand a knight's hop apart, alarm bells should ring.

The knight's signature masterpiece is the smothered mate — the only checkmate delivered against a king entombed by its own army. The textbook finish: the enemy king sits on g8 behind pawns on g7 and h7; Nh6+ forces Kh8 (double check — the king must move), the stunning Qg8+! forces Rxg8, and Nf7# ends the game. The queen seals the tomb, and the piece worth three pawns mates a fully defended king alone. Every player should execute this pattern at least once; it never stops being satisfying.

Finally, when a knight reaches a protected square deep in enemy territory — the sixth rank for White, the third for Black — players call it an octopus: eight tentacles reaching everywhere at once while the opponent's position slowly suffocates. The immortal example is Game 16 of the Karpov–Kasparov world championship match, Moscow 1985. Kasparov, playing Black in a pawn-sacrifice line of the Sicilian, steered his knight to b4 and then into d3 — a square in the heart of White's camp that no white pawn could ever touch. Tactically immune to capture, the d3 knight paralyzed Karpov's entire army: the rooks could not connect, the pieces tangled around each other, and Black's initiative grew until White's position collapsed. Kasparov won, went on to take the title, and the "octopus on d3" became shorthand for what a dominant knight does: it does not just attack things — it makes normal life impossible. The practical lesson: a securely anchored knight in the enemy camp can be worth far more than three points, and the pawn it sometimes costs to plant one is usually cheap.

The Color Rule: A Knight Can Never Lose a Tempo

Here is a fact that sounds like trivia and turns out to be deep: every knight move lands on the opposite color square. A knight on a light square can only move to dark squares, and vice versa. Watch a knight for a few moves and it blinks light-dark-light-dark forever.

The consequence: a knight can only return to any given square in an even number of moves — which means a knight cannot lose a tempo. Kings, queens, rooks, and bishops can all waste a move on purpose; techniques like triangulation exist precisely so a king can burn a tempo and hand the opponent the obligation to move. The knight is constitutionally incapable of this trick. In endgames decided by zugzwang — where whoever must move loses — this quirk decides real games: some knight endings that any other piece would win easily are only drawn, because you cannot pass the move back to your opponent.

The color rule is also a free calculation shortcut. Need the knight on a dark square in one move? It had better stand on a light square now. Checking colors before calculating knight paths prunes impossible ideas instantly — one of the first visualization habits I train into students.

Knight or Bishop? Practical Guidance

"Which is better?" has no universal answer — the pawn structure decides, which is exactly the theme of my book Chess Structures. Here is the honest practical guide.

The knight is better when: the position is closed or blocked; there is a secure central outpost available; the pawns are fixed on one wing, keeping the fight local; there is an enemy passed pawn to blockade; or the enemy bishop is locked behind its own pawns.

The bishop is better when: the position is open with clear diagonals; there are pawns on both wings, where the bishop's speed across the board tells; you are racing passed pawns (a bishop stops a distant pawn from across the board — a knight must gallop back square by square); and above all when you own both bishops, since the bishop pair covers both colors and is a genuine advantage in open play.

At master level the bishop wins this argument slightly more often, because masters steer toward open positions. At club level, though, I see far more players give up a magnificent knight for a mediocre bishop "because bishops are better" than the reverse. Judge the position in front of you: a knight heading for an unchallengeable d5 beats a bishop staring at its own pawn chain every time.

Common Beginner Mistakes with Knights

Developing knights to the rim. Na3 and Nh3 (or ...Na6, ...Nh6) without a concrete reason surrender half the knight's power on move two. Knights belong on f3, c3, f6, c6 in most openings — toward the center, eyeing e5 and d5.

Moving the same knight repeatedly in the opening. Three knight moves while your bishops sleep is how you end up lost by move 12. Develop everything once, castle, and only then start maneuvering.

Walking into pawn kicks. A knight posted where an enemy pawn can attack it is a knight about to retreat. Before landing a knight anywhere, ask: which pawn can hit it, and where do I go when it does?

Missing enemy knight forks. Until the knight's geometry becomes automatic, you will hang material to forks — everyone does. The habit that fixes it: whenever an enemy knight is within two moves of your king or queen, check every square it can reach.

Trading the wrong minor piece. Swapping your outpost knight for a passive bishop, or keeping a rim knight while conceding a strong bishop — minor-piece trades shape the whole game. Ask what each piece will be doing three moves from now before you trade.

Trusting a knight to catch a runner. Knights are slow: against a passed pawn on the far side of the board, a knight needs several moves where a bishop needs one glance. Simplifying into "knight versus outside passed pawn" endings loses many drawn positions.
