Triangulation

Triangulation is an endgame maneuver in which a king walks around a triangle of three squares, returning to its starting square in three moves instead of two, in order to hand the obligation to move over to the opponent. You deliberately waste a tempo — and in the right position, wasting a tempo is the winning move. The first time a student executes it correctly, they always look up at me as if they have just been let in on a magic trick. They have.

What Is Triangulation?

Most chess technique is about improving your position. Triangulation improves nothing — the pieces end up exactly where they started. What changes is the turn. The maneuver exists because of zugzwang: in simplified endings there are positions where whoever has to move must worsen their own game. Knowing such a position is only half the job; you also need to arrive in it with your opponent to move. Triangulation is the arrival technique.

The mechanics are pure arithmetic. Your king can travel from a square back to that same square in two moves (out and back) or in three (around a triangle). If your opponent's king is restricted — able only to shuffle between two squares — it can only return in an even number of moves. So you choose the three-move route, your opponent is forced through a two-move shuffle, and the same position appears on the board with the turn transferred. You have "lost" a move; your opponent has lost the game.

Triangulation is the practical weapon behind concepts you may already know. The opposition tells you which king standoffs are winning; triangulation is one of the main tools for reaching those standoffs on your terms. If the opposition is the destination, triangulation is the taxi that arrives at exactly the right moment.

Why a King Can Lose a Move — and a Knight Never Can

The king's superpower here is parity control: it reaches the same square in either two moves or three, whichever you need. Queens, rooks, and bishops share this gift — a bishop can shuffle along its diagonal and return, a queen can trace a small triangle of her own. That is why bishop endings and queen endings are full of waiting-move technique.

The knight is the famous exception. Every knight move goes from a light square to a dark square or vice versa, without exception, so a knight returns to any square only in an even number of moves. A knight cannot lose a tempo — not sometimes, not with cleverness: never. This single fact decides real games. In a knight ending you may reach the perfect zugzwang position with the wrong player to move and discover there is no way to pass the obligation across, while the identical position with a bishop instead of a knight would be trivially won. When I evaluate simplifications into minor-piece endings, "can I lose a move if I need to?" is one of the first questions I ask, and the answer often settles which trade to allow.

A Textbook Triangulation, Square by Square

Let me show you the mechanism in a schematic position from basic endgame theory. White: king on c6, pawns on d4 and e5. Black: king on e7, pawn on e6. The pawns are locked: White's e5-pawn, protected by the pawn on d4, is frozen against Black's e6-pawn. White wins if the king can attack and capture e6, which means entering d6 or d7. The geometry is lovely and symmetric: Black's pawn on e6 denies White's king the squares d5 and f5, while White's pawn on e5 denies Black's king d6 and f6.

First, understand why Black to move loses instantly. From e7, Black's king guards both entry squares. But every legal move abandons the post: after 1...Kd8 or 1...Ke8 or 1...Kf7 or 1...Kf8, White's king walks into d6 or d7, attacks the e6-pawn, and Black cannot keep defending it — the shield squares d6 and f6 are off-limits to Black's king forever. The pawn falls, and White's connected pawns win trivially.

Now the real question: the same position with White to move. White would love to pass. Watch the triangle: 1.Kc5! — stepping back but still eyeing d6. Black must keep guarding the entrances, and only one square does the job: 1...Kd7 (instead 1...Kd8 loses at once to 2.Kd6, and 1...Kc7 2.Kb5! Kd7 3.Kb6 just rotates the same triangle). Now 2.Kb6!, and Black is out of squares: the king must keep watching the gates at d6 and d7, but from d7 every move lets go of something. After 2...Ke7 3.Kc6 the starting position is back on the board — with Black to move. The triangle c6–c5–b6 is complete, the zugzwang bites the other player, and the e6-pawn falls as shown above. If Black instead strays with 2...Kd8, then 3.Kc6 wins as well, since Black's king has drifted even further from the entry squares and can no longer regain its coordination.

Count the squares and you see the whole logic: White's king had three good squares near the action — c6, c5, b6 — while Black's king had only two useful posts, e7 and d7, from which to guard the gates. Three against two means White can always burn the extra move. That counting, not memorization, is the transferable skill: in any suspected triangulation, count your safe squares and count your opponent's. If you have three and they have two, the tempo is yours to give.

When Triangulation Works — and When It Fails

Triangulation has one strict requirement: the defender must be restricted. Tied to blockading a passed pawn, chained to the defense of a weakness, or hemmed in by the edge of the board — something must limit the defending king to its two-square shuffle. Against a free king, the maneuver accomplishes nothing, because the defender simply mirrors your waiting moves with waiting moves of their own.

The cleanest illustration is the most fundamental ending in chess: king and pawn against bare king. Take White king e5, pawn e4, against Black king e7 — White to move. This position is a draw, and no triangle in the world changes that: whenever White's king sidesteps, Black's unrestricted king keeps taking the opposition, matching maneuver for maneuver. That is worth engraving: in the bare king and pawn ending you fight with the opposition, not triangulation; the defender there has nothing to guard and therefore nothing to run out of. Triangulation enters the story precisely when the defender acquires a duty — one more pawn on the board is often enough, as in our textbook example.

The flip side matters for your defensive play. When you are the one defending a difficult ending, guard your freedom: avoid taking on blockading duties with your king when a piece can do the job, and keep spare squares the way a miser keeps coins. A defender with three usable squares cannot be triangulated against. The logical extreme of this idea is the fortress — a setup with an inexhaustible supply of safe waiting moves, immune to zugzwang and therefore immune to triangulation. And when no progress is possible for either side, the 50-move rule eventually certifies the draw.

Losing a Tempo Beyond the King Triangle

The triangle is one member of a family of tempo-losing techniques, and a practical player should know its relatives. The cheapest is the reserve pawn move: a quiet a2–a3 that changes nothing but passes the turn. This is why I nag my students not to rush their pawns in better endings — every unspent pawn move is a triangulation you did not have to walk. A tempo in the bank beats a tempo on foot.

Bishops lose moves along a diagonal while keeping every duty covered, which is one reason the side with a bishop torments the side with a knight or a bad bishop in blocked endings: one side can pass, the other cannot. Queens triangulate too — in queen endings, small triangular maneuvers transfer the move while maintaining checks and threats. Rooks can usually shuttle along a file, though in rook endings genuine zugzwang is rarer because the defender also has more spare moves. The through-line is always the same question I gave you for the king: who runs out of safe moves first?

Triangulation in Practice

Here is the practical method, in the order I teach it. First, find the zugzwang. Before any maneuvering, identify the target position and verify that your opponent to move loses it — the null-move test: "if my opponent had to move here, would their position collapse?" If you cannot name that position, no amount of triangulating will help; you would be walking in triangles for exercise. Second, count squares — your safe waiting squares versus theirs, remembering the restrictions: which squares are denied to each king by pawns, and which duties chain the defender. Third, walk the triangle, checking at each step that your opponent cannot break out of the shuffle or start a counterattack against your pawns while your king is mid-route. That last check matters: a triangulating king briefly steps away from the action, and careless triangles have lost half points to a sudden king dash at the moment of maximum distance.

In my own games, the search for triangulation usually begins with a feeling rather than a calculation: the position is winning "except that it's my move." Train yourself to notice that exact discomfort — it is the smell of zugzwang one tempo out of phase, and the triangle is the standard cure. And remember the knight rule from earlier: if your remaining piece is a knight, the cure does not exist, so arrange the parity before simplifying, not after.

What is the difference between triangulation and the opposition?

The opposition describes a standoff: kings facing each other, where the player not obliged to move has the advantage. Triangulation is a maneuver: the three-move king walk that returns to the same position with the turn transferred. They cooperate constantly — triangulation is one of the standard tools for seizing the opposition or delivering a known zugzwang with the opponent to move.

Why can't a knight triangulate?

Every knight move changes the color of the knight's square, so returning to any square takes an even number of moves — there is no three-move round trip. A knight can therefore never lose a single tempo. Kings, queens, rooks, and bishops all can, which makes the knight the one piece with which you cannot pass the obligation to move across the board.

Can Black triangulate too?

Of course. The maneuver belongs to whichever side has the extra maneuvering square and a restricted opponent — color is irrelevant. In practice the triangulating side is usually the stronger side, because it is the defender who ends up chained to blockading and guarding duties, but defenders with spare squares can and do lose tempi to dodge zugzwang themselves.

Does triangulation exist in the middlegame?

The pure form is rare with many pieces on the board, because almost everyone has spare moves and genuine zugzwang hardly occurs. What survives into the middlegame is the underlying question — who benefits if the position stays the same and the turn passes? — which connects to waiting strategies and quiet improving moves. But as a concrete winning device, triangulation lives in the endgame, above all in king and pawn endings.

How do I know when a position calls for triangulation?

Apply the null-move test: if your opponent were forced to move in the current standoff, would their position collapse? If yes, but it is your move, you need to lose exactly one tempo — and you should immediately count waiting squares (yours versus theirs) and check for a reserve pawn move first, which is the cheaper way to pass. If the pawn moves are spent and you have the extra square, walk the triangle.
