Bishop

The bishop in chess moves any number of squares along a diagonal, is worth about three pawns, and each side starts the game with two of them — on c1 and f1 for White, c8 and f8 for Black. Because it travels only diagonally, a bishop spends its entire life on squares of a single color, and that one fact generates almost everything worth knowing about bishop strategy. In my coaching I have found that no piece rewards good pawn play — and punishes careless pawn play — as directly as the bishop does.

How Does the Bishop Move?

The bishop slides along diagonals in any direction — forward or backward — for as many squares as it likes, as long as the path is empty. It cannot jump over pieces, and it captures the same way it moves: by landing on the square of an enemy piece. There are no special restrictions, no first-move bonuses, no exceptions. What changes from square to square is how much board the bishop sees. From a central square like e4 or d5, a bishop controls up to 13 squares along two crossing diagonals; pushed to the corner, that shrinks to 7. And unlike a knight, whose reach is fixed, the bishop's real strength depends entirely on whether its diagonals are open. That is the first practical rule I give students: evaluate a bishop by counting the open squares on its diagonals, not by admiring where it stands. A "developed" bishop biting on granite is worse than an undeveloped one with a future.

One Color for Life: Light-Squared and Dark-Squared Bishops

Here is the defining fact of the piece. A diagonal move always keeps you on the same color, so the bishop that starts on a light square remains a light-squared bishop forever, and its partner remains a dark-squared bishop forever. For White, the f1 bishop is the light-squared one and the c1 bishop the dark-squared one; for Black, c8 is light and f8 is dark. Each bishop can only ever visit 32 of the board's 64 squares — half the board is permanently invisible to it.

The consequences run deep:

  • A lone bishop cannot control the whole board. Anything sitting on the opposite color — an enemy king, a passed pawn, a blockading knight — is untouchable for it.
  • Trading a bishop weakens its color permanently. If you give up your dark-squared bishop, every dark square in your camp loses its natural defender. Strong players immediately probe that color complex, parking pieces on the squares your remaining forces cannot challenge.
  • The two bishops are complements, not duplicates. Together they cover both halves of the color spectrum, which is precisely why the pair is a recognized advantage — more on that below.

When I evaluate a minor-piece trade, my first question is never "bishop or knight?" in the abstract. It is: which color squares will matter in this position, and who will control them afterward?

Bishop vs Knight: Which Is Better?

Both minor pieces are worth roughly three pawns, and the honest answer is that neither is universally superior — the pawn structure decides. But the guidelines are well established, and they win games when applied consistently.

The bishop is better in open positions. With clear diagonals, its long-range speed dominates: it can attack a target on one wing and retreat to defend the other in a single move. That leads to the most practical rule of all: when there are pawns on both wings, prefer the bishop. A bishop switches flanks instantly; a knight needs three or four moves to trudge across the board, and in an endgame with play on both sides, that slowness is often the whole game.

The knight is better in closed positions. When locked pawn chains block the diagonals, the knight's ability to jump makes it the only minor piece that still functions — especially when it finds a protected outpost deep in enemy territory. A knight anchored on a hole in front of a backward pawn can outperform a rook, while a bishop behind the same chains might as well be a spectator.

The practical guidance I give students: before every minor-piece trade, picture the pawn structure that will remain. If it is fluid and likely to open, keep the bishop. If it is fixed and blocked, the knight is your piece — and trading a knight for the opponent's active bishop can be a small victory in itself.

The Bishop Pair Advantage

Keeping both bishops while your opponent has bishop-and-knight or two knights is a real, bankable edge — the bishop pair is often estimated at around half a pawn in open positions. The reason follows directly from the one-color rule: two bishops cover both colors, erasing the lone bishop's blind spot, and together they rake the board like scissors. A single bishop can be neutralized by putting everything on the opposite color; against the pair, there is nowhere to hide.

The strategy for both sides is clear. If you own the pair, open the position — trade central pawns, avoid locked chains, and be patient, because the pair grows stronger as the board empties. If you face the pair, keep the position closed and maneuver to trade off one bishop, which converts the game back to a normal minor-piece battle. Much high-level maneuvering that looks mysterious to club players is exactly this fight: one side preserving the two bishops, the other hunting an exchange.

Developing the Bishop: Classical Squares and the Fianchetto

Bishops develop in two main styles. The classical way puts them on active central diagonals: White's light-squared bishop goes to c4 — aiming at the sensitive f7 pawn, the heart of the Italian Game — or to b5, pinning a knight, while the dark-squared bishop comes to e3, f4, or g5. These placements fight for the center immediately.

The second method is the fianchetto: you play g3 (or b3, g6, b6) and tuck the bishop onto the long diagonal at g2 or b2. A fianchettoed bishop is the ultimate expression of the piece's nature — the longest diagonal on the board, cutting through the center from a safe home where enemy pieces cannot easily harass it. Entire opening systems are built on this one idea: the Catalan revolves around White's g2 bishop pressuring Black's queenside, and the King's Indian Defense around Black's g7 bishop bearing down the a1–h8 diagonal.

One classical guideline worth keeping: develop knights before bishops. Knights almost always belong on f3 and c3 (or f6 and c6), but the best diagonal for a bishop depends on how the central pawn structure settles. Committing a bishop early, before the structure declares itself, is how bishops end up on the wrong diagonal for the rest of the game.

Good Bishop, Bad Bishop: Your Pawns Decide

Because a bishop and a pawn chain share the board's diagonals, your own pawns are either your bishop's best friends or its jailers. The classic guideline — put your pawns on the opposite color of your bishop — is one of the oldest pieces of positional advice in chess, and it is still the fastest way to sort strong bishops from weak ones. Pawns on the opposite color leave the bishop's diagonals open and cover the squares the bishop cannot; pawns on the same color entomb it.

A bishop locked behind its own fixed pawns is the notorious bad bishop — students of the French Defense know the c8 bishop as a lifelong problem child, walled in by pawns on e6 and d5. One refinement separates club players from strong players: a "bad" bishop that stands outside its pawn chain is often a perfectly good piece. The label describes the relationship between bishop and pawns, not the bishop's activity — a French bishop that escapes to a6 or g4 before the chain closes may be technically "bad" and practically excellent. Judge activity first, labels second.

Opposite-Colored Bishops: Two Games in One

When each side keeps only the bishop of the opposite color, the position obeys strange rules — and they point in opposite directions depending on the phase of the game.

In the middlegame, opposite-colored bishops favor the attacker. Whatever your bishop attacks, the enemy bishop can never defend, so on the squares of your bishop's color you are effectively a piece up. Attacks in these positions have a frightening one-sided quality: the defender watches the assault arrive on a color they simply cannot contest.

In the endgame, opposite-colored bishops are notoriously drawish. The defender plants king and pawns on the color the enemy bishop cannot touch, blockades any passed pawn on a safe square, and even a deficit of one or two pawns is frequently not enough to win. When I am worse, I steer toward these endings; when I am better, I avoid them like the plague.

A cousin of this theme decides many rook-pawn endings: the wrong-colored bishop. With king, bishop, and a rook pawn (a- or h-file) against a bare king, the game is a draw — despite the huge material edge — if the bishop does not control the pawn's promotion corner and the defending king reaches it. A White h-pawn needs the dark-squared bishop that controls h8; with the light-squared one, the defender sits in the corner and nothing can evict him. From War Elephant to Bishop: The Name

The bishop is the piece whose identity changed most across chess history. In the game's Indian and Persian ancestors it was an elephant — Arabic al-fīl, "the elephant" — and the old alfil was feeble, jumping exactly two squares diagonally. The modern long-range bishop was born in the rule reforms of late 15th-century Europe, the same revolution that gave the queen her powers.

The languages of chess still disagree about what the piece is. Spanish kept the Arabic name (alfil); Russian still calls it the elephant (slon); German and Dutch call it the runner (Läufer, loper); French, memorably, calls it the jester (fou). English saw a bishop's mitre in the piece's cleft top — and the name stuck.

Common Bishop Mistakes I See in Students

Blocking your own bishop with pawns. The most frequent error at club level: casually advancing pawns onto the bishop's color and fixing them there. Every pawn move is a small decision about which bishop gets better and which gets worse.

Giving up the bishop pair without compensation. Trading a bishop for a knight "to double his pawns" or to win a tempo is often a silent concession. Sell the pair only for structural damage that matters or a concrete tactical gain.

Trusting labels over activity. Dismissing an actively placed bishop because the pawn structure says it is "bad," or overvaluing a "good" bishop with nothing to attack. The board outranks the rulebook.

Trading the fianchettoed bishop in front of your king. That bishop is both attacker and bodyguard; once it disappears, the weakened squares around your king become a permanent target on its color.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bishop change the color of its squares?

No. Every diagonal move stays on the same color, so a bishop that starts on light squares can never legally reach a dark square. The only way to obtain a "new" bishop on a different color is to promote a pawn to a bishop — legal, but one of the rarest events in chess.

Which bishop is better, the light-squared or the dark-squared one?

Neither is better by nature; the position decides. The valuable bishop is the one operating on the color of the important squares — the enemy king's weakened squares, a key pawn's promotion square, the holes in the structure. If your opponent has weakened the dark squares around their king, the dark-squared bishop can be worth far more than its nominal three points.

Is a bishop worth the same as a knight?

Roughly yes — both count as about three pawns.
