A windmill is a tactical machine of alternating checks and discovered checks that lets one side capture material on every other move while the opponent can do nothing but answer the checks. The opponent never gets a move of his own. Each rotation of the mill harvests a pawn or a piece, and the machine only stops when its owner decides there is nothing left worth taking — or switches from harvesting to mating.
The classic geometry is a white rook on g7 with a bishop on the long a1–h8 diagonal behind it (say, on f6) against a king cornered on h8. Two details of this game are worth a student's attention. First, the mill's exit: Torre did not rotate forever — he chose the moment when leaving the cycle (31.Rg5+) won the largest prize. Knowing when to stop the windmill is part of the technique. Second, the entry ticket: 25.Bf6 was a queen sacrifice, and it was sound because the machine it switched on harvested more than a queen's worth of material. Windmills routinely justify enormous investments; when you calculate one, count the total harvest, not the first capture.
Setting Up a Windmill
Windmills do not appear by accident; they are assembled from recognizable parts. When these ingredients coexist, alarms should ring on both sides of the board:
- A battery with the king in its line. Rook (or queen) plus bishop arrangements where the front piece's departure gives check are the engine. The g7/f6 configuration against a castled king is the standard model.
- A cornered king. The victim king must have one or two squares at most. A king trapped on the back rank by its own pawns — the same fault that enables the back-rank mate — is the usual fuel.
- Loot along the front piece's path. The mill only pays if the moving piece has targets: a seventh rank full of pawns and pieces is the classic buffet, which is one more reason the seventh rank is worth fighting for.
Often the position is one forcing move away from meeting these conditions, and a preparatory sacrifice — a decoy check that drags the king to the fatal corner, or an exchange sacrifice that removes the one defender of g7 — switches the machine on. Defending Against the Windmill
The defense must happen before the first discovered check, because afterward there are no moves to defend with. Three prophylactic rules cover most cases:
- Never allow the rook-plus-bishop alignment against your cornered king. The moment an enemy bishop eyes f6 (or f3 against White) with heavy pieces ready to land on g7 (or g2), calculate concretely — "it looks scary but takes two moves" has lost countless games.
- Keep an escape hatch. A king with a flight square off the checking lines breaks the cycle instantly: one non-forced tempo for the defender and the mill jams. Luft is not only back-rank insurance.
- Offer material to stop the rotation. If the mill has started, sometimes the only resource is to feed it: interpose a piece on the discovered-check line even at ruinous cost, because a running windmill is more expensive than any single piece.
The Windmill in Practice
