Both sides therefore need the same three landmarks: the Philidor position, where the attacker wins by force and which the defender must avoid at all costs; the Cochrane defense, the pin-based fortress that holds; and the second-rank defense, the low-maintenance setup that keeps the game inside the draw. The Base Truth: Drawn, but Only on Paper

Start with the verified foundation. Away from the edge, the defender holds comfortably. White: king d4, bishop d3, rook a1. Black: king d6, rook h8 — and Black's setup illustrates the two standing rules of the defense: king off the back rank, rook far away and active.

1...Rh4+! — the defender's rook does its job from maximum range, checking the moment the enemy king looks ambitious. After 2.Be4 Rh8 the rook slides home, ready to check again, and White has made no progress: the bishop that blocked the check is now a shield the attacking king has to leave behind if it advances. For the defender the lesson is blunt: the Philidor is lost before it appears on the board. The losing move was whatever allowed direct opposition on the back rank. Which raises the real question — what should the defense look like instead?

The Cochrane Defense: The Pin That Holds

The Cochrane defense is the defender's sharpest resource: pin the bishop against the attacking king and paralyze the whole winning machine. White: king d5, bishop d4, rook g2. Black: king c7, rook d1 — the rook nails the bishop to the d-file from behind:

The position is a verified draw, and every element earns its place. The pin freezes the bishop: while king and bishop stand on the same file, the bishop cannot lend its protection to rook maneuvers — no bishop-protected seventh-rank squares means no Philidor squeeze. The defending king stands one file to the side, close enough to shadow the attacking king, far enough to avoid direct opposition. And the defending rook, checking-ready behind the position, forces an unpleasant choice on White: keep the formation and achieve nothing, or step the king off the file to unpin — after which the black rook reverts to long-range checks and the black king drifts back toward the center. The defense is most robust with the pin on the central files, where the defending king has room on both sides; the closer the action drifts to the edge, the more exact Black must be.

The Second-Rank Defense: The Everyday Draw

Long before the position sharpens enough for Cochrane pins, the defender can adopt the second-rank defense — the setup practical players should reach for first. The formation: king on the back rank, rook on the rank directly in front of it (the defender's second rank), shuffling along that rank. The rook there does three jobs at once: it guards the row of squares the attacker needs for the mating construction, it denies the enemy rook a safe landing on that rank, and it always has waiting moves, so the zugzwang that powers the Philidor never bites. The defense is prized precisely because it runs on rules rather than calculation — shuffle the rook, keep it defended or out of reach, and refuse to be lured off the rank. Its limit: against the most persistent pressure the attacker may eventually force the rook away, and the defender must then transition — often into a Cochrane pin or back to distant checking. Knowing that the fallback exists is part of the defense.

Practical Play: Surviving Fifty Moves

As the defender: stay off the edge as long as humanly possible — every technique works better with the king near the center, and the Philidor requires your king on the back rank, so treat the back rank as enemy territory. Keep the rook at checking distance or in a second-rank formation, never passively adjacent to your king. Avoid direct king opposition; when the kings face off with yours on the edge, the Philidor is one move away. Count moves — arbiters and interfaces track the fifty-move counter, and knowing you need only a dozen more correct moves changes your decisions. And beware the endgame's cruelest trick: a defender who has held for forty moves and relaxes. This ending is a concentration test dressed up as a chess position, much like its cousin queen vs rook, where the defender's task is harder still.

As the attacker: play it out — always. You risk nothing, the defense is genuinely difficult, and even strong opponents crack.
