Checking Distance
Checking distance is the rule that decides whether a rook's checks are a real defense or an empty gesture: a rook needs at least three empty squares between itself and its target — the enemy king for side checks, the pawn it faces for frontal checks — to keep checking indefinitely. With that margin, the king can never approach the rook without releasing its pawn; with less, the king simply walks up, attacks the rook, and the checks die. Half of rook endgame defense — frontal checks, side checks, the short-side rule — is this one measurement applied in different directions.
The Three-Square Rule
Picture a rook checking a king along a file or rank. After each check the king steps one square closer. If the rook began three or more squares away, it can afford to keep its post — by the time the king arrives, it has abandoned whatever it was doing, usually escorting a pawn, and the defender's own king has used those tempi to improve. If the rook began closer, the king reaches it while still keeping everything defended, the rook must flee with loss of function, and the defense collapses.
Three squares is the break-even because of a pleasing arithmetic: chasing a rook at distance three costs the king at least two full moves away from its duties, and two moves is what the defending king or rook needs to restore the blockade. I tell students to physically count the gap before committing to a checking plan — it takes two seconds and it is the difference between a theoretical draw and a theoretical loss.
Frontal Checks: The Defense That Holds on the Fourth Rank
The cleanest laboratory for the rule is the frontal defense: the defending rook stands on its first rank, directly in front of the enemy pawn, and checks down the file every time the attacking king tries to step ahead of the pawn. In the frontal version the distance is measured to the pawn, since the king leads from just ahead of it: here White's pawn is on b4, and the rook on b8 keeps exactly three empty squares between itself and the pawn — b5, b6, b7. The tablebase says draw, and the mechanism is worth watching in full:
1.Kc5 Rc8+! — the only move, and everything here is only moves — 2.Kb6 Rb8+! and now White faces the rule's dilemma. Retreating toward the pawn (3.Kc5 or 3.Ka5) lets the rook return to b8 and repeat forever. Advancing to chase the rook — 3.Kc7 — attacks it at last, but look what the king left behind: 3...Rxb4! and the pawn is gone, dead draw. The checks were never going to mate anyone; their entire purpose was to present White with that choice — repeat, or win the rook's post at the cost of the pawn.
Now the boundary. Advance everything one rank — pawn b5, king b6, rook still on b8 — and the checking distance shrinks below the threshold. The same defense now loses by force:
1.Ka6! Ra8+ 2.Kb7 — the check is answered by attacking the rook, because a8 and b7 are adjacent. The frontal grip is broken: 2...Ra2 3.b6 and the pawn marches with the king as its personal bodyguard, 3...Rb2 4.Ka7 Ra2+ 5.Kb8, and each subsequent check is met the same way, king to the rook or king behind the pawn. This is the classical statement, tablebase-confirmed: the frontal defense holds when the pawn has not crossed the middle of the board, and fails from the fifth rank on. The pawn's rank is really a proxy for the rook's distance — every rank the pawn gains subtracts one square from the defender's margin.
Side Checks: The Same Rule, Rotated Ninety Degrees
Turn the geometry sideways and you get the checking mechanism of the short-side defense: the defending rook checks along ranks from the far side of the board while its king shelters on the near side. The three-square rule governs identically. A rook checking from the a-file against a king on an f-pawn has four files of gap — the king can never cross that desert without abandoning the pawn, so the checks last forever. A rook forced to check from the g- or h-file against the same pawn is attacked the moment the king steps toward it.
Here is the failure case, verified as a forced win: White's f-pawn on the sixth, and the defending rook reduced to checking from one file away.

How the Attacker Fights the Distance
Understanding the rule from the attacking side is just as profitable, because strong attackers spend the whole endgame shrinking the defender's margin before it matters.
- Approach the rook, not the pawn. When checks begin, the winning king-walk usually heads toward the checking rook, using the pawn as a rear shield — exactly the escape that beat the b5-pawn's frontal defense above, and the same walk that converts a wide cut-off in rook and pawn versus rook.
- Build shelter in advance. A king with a hiding square adjacent to its pawn never needs to outrun checks at all. The bridge of the Lucena position is manufactured shelter — the rook interposes where the king protects it.
- Interpose with tempo. If your rook can block a check while attacking the checking rook or defending the pawn, the defender's whole apparatus unwinds at once.
- Herd the rook first. Before advancing the pawn past the middle, drive the enemy rook to a short line if you can. A defender whose rook sits three squares away is drawn; the same defender two squares away is lost — so make that conversion your project, not an accident.
The Defender's Habits
For the defender the rule compresses into habits. Send the rook to the farthest useful line early — the h-file against a queenside pawn, the a-file against an f-pawn — rather than after the pawn has advanced, because distance surrendered is rarely regained. Count before you check: a check that brings the king closer for free is worse than a waiting move. Keep the Philidor position as first prize — the blockade never needs checking distance because the king never gets past the third rank — and treat long-range checks as the second line that activates when the blockade fails. And when your rook cannot reach a long line at all, that is the signal to look at the back-rank defense or accept that the position may already be beyond saving — better to know it than to check twice from short range and resign three moves later.
