Bishop vs Pawns

A bishop is the best pawn-stopper in chess after the rook: it halts a single passed pawn from clear across the board by controlling one square on its path, and with even modest king support it holds two connected passers as well. The two headline results every player needs are the wrong-bishop rook pawn — where the bishop's own side cannot win with an extra piece — and the escorted connected passers, which beat a lone bishop once the defending king is out of range. Both boundaries are tablebase-verified below.

These endings appear in two mirrored forms: sometimes your bishop is the last defender against runners, and sometimes your pawns are trying to outrun the enemy bishop. Everything on this page reads both ways, and the practical skill is knowing on sight which side of each boundary you stand.

One Pawn: The Bishop's Easiest Job

Against a lone passer, the bishop's long range settles matters immediately: put the bishop anywhere on a free diagonal crossing the pawn's path, and the pawn can never pass — advancing into the controlled square just loses it, and the escorting king cannot block a diagonal by standing on one square of it while the bishop attacks from the other side. The defender does not even need his king. The one care point is picking the long diagonal: a bishop close to the pawn can be attacked and driven off by the king, while a bishop five squares away does the same job untouchably. Distance is safety — a lesson that generalizes to most bishop defense. Because of this, king and pawn versus bishop is virtually never a winning attempt — with one towering exception.

The Wrong-Bishop Rook Pawn

The most famous fortress in chess: a rook pawn whose promotion corner the bishop does not control cannot win even with the bishop on its own side. White: Kg6, pawn h6, Bd3 — a light-squared bishop, and h8 is a dark square. Black: king alone on h8. White to move, tablebase draw:

Play any waiting move — 1.Bc4 — and the game ends immediately: Black has no legal move, and it is stalemate. That is not a coincidence; it is the fortress mechanism itself. The black king shuttles between h8 and h7 (and g8 when available); White's light-squared bishop can never attack the dark corner h8, so the king can never be evicted, and every attempt to make progress either repeats or stalemates: 1.h7 is stalemate on the spot too. The pawn is forever one square short, because promotion requires the king to leave h8, and nothing can make it leave.

Defending a pawn-down bishop ending: if the enemy's last pawn will be a rook pawn of the wrong color, you may sacrifice your bishop for every other pawn with a clear conscience — the resulting "lost" position is a book draw once your king touches the corner. Attacking: count your rook pawn's corner color before trading down; a wrong-colored h-pawn plus bishop is worth precisely half a point against a cornered king, and the moment to avoid that fate is several trades earlier.

Two Connected Passers: The Real Fight

Against connected passed pawns the bishop's job gets serious, and the defending king's distance becomes the whole evaluation. Start with the case every defender must recognize as lost — pawns escorted by their king, defending king absent. White: Ka8, Bc1. Black: Kf3, pawns f4 and g4. White to move, and Black wins:

Watch the mechanism, because it teaches you both sides' technique: 1.Bb2 g3! 2.Ba3 g2 3.Bc5 Ke2! (the king shields the path — not 3...g1=Q?? 4.Bxg1) 4.Bg1 f3 5.Bd4 f2 and the bishop is overloaded: 6.Bxf2 Kxf2 and the g-pawn promotes. The pawns advanced alternately, each one waiting on the square color the bishop currently watched while the other ran, and the king plugged the diagonal at the decisive moment. Connected passed pawns beat a lone bishop this way whenever their king escorts them and the bishop's king cannot help: the bishop can hold one color complex, never both.

Now bring the defending king into range and the verdict flips. Same pawns, but the white king on f1 instead of a8. White to move draws — and the cleanest path is instructive shock therapy:

1.Bxf4! simply eats the rear pawn — it was defended only by the king, and the trade transforms the position into king and pawn vs king with the defending king already in front: 1...Kxf4 2.Kg2! g3 3.Kg1 Kf3 4.Kf1 g2+ 5.Kg1 Kg3 stalemate. Note the one precision move: 2.Kg2! — the tablebase confirms that the lazy 2.Kg1? loses, because it concedes the critical squares. The deeper lesson is the sacrifice itself: the bishop's exchange value against pawns is exactly "whatever makes the remaining pawn ending drawn." A defender who clings to the bishop while the pawns roll dies with the piece in hand; a defender who counts the pawn ending gives it up a full move early and shakes hands.

When to Give the Bishop

That last idea deserves its own rules, because bishop-for-pawns decisions are where these endings are won and lost in practice:

  • Give the bishop the moment one pawn becomes unstoppable, and take the other with it if you can. Bishop for two connected pawns that were about to promote is the best trade in the endgame.
  • Check the leftover pawn ending first, always. The sacrifice only saves you if the resulting king-and-pawn position is drawn — king in front, or the wrong-bishop corner reached by the king alone.
  • Against widely split pawns, the bishop often handles both alone — one diagonal can cross two pawns' paths, especially from the center. The dangerous configuration is precisely the connected pair, which advances on alternating colors, or split pawns far advanced on the same color complex's blind spots with the king free to help one of them.
  • As the pawn side, advance the pawn the bishop is not currently stopping, keep the pawns abreast rather than racing one ahead (a lone advanced pawn on the bishop's color is simply lost), and use your king as the diagonal-blocker at the finish, exactly as in the winning line above. Two pawns abreast on the fifth or sixth rank with king support are a promotion machine no bishop stops alone — which is why a defending fortress must be organized before they cross the middle of the board.

Can a bishop stop two connected passed pawns?

With help from its king, yes — the standard drawing method is to blockade or even give the bishop for one pawn at the right moment, reaching a drawn king-and-pawn ending. What is the wrong bishop, exactly?

How far away can a bishop be and still stop a pawn?

Any distance, as long as it sits on an open diagonal crossing a square on the pawn's path. Range is the bishop's superpower: from eight squares away it does the same job as from two, and it is safer, because the escorting king cannot attack it. Only interference — something blocking the diagonal — or a forced eviction breaks the hold.

Why do connected pawns beat the bishop when split pawns often do not?

Connected pawns advance on alternating square colors and defend each other, so the bishop can never attack the pair profitably and can never watch both advance squares at once. Does it matter which pawn of a connected pair advances first?
