Rook-Pawn Endings
The a- and h-pawns are the weakest pawns in the endgame for one geometric reason: the board ends next to them, so the winning maneuvers that work everywhere else have no room to operate. This page maps the three drawing mechanisms every player must know — the defender's corner fortress, the attacker boxed in front of its own pawn, and the wrong-bishop draw — and the one honest question that tells you when a rook pawn still wins: who reaches the corner first.

The Corner Fortress: When the Defender Reaches g8
Against a central pawn, king-in-front-on-the-sixth wins always. Against a rook pawn, watch the same "ideal" setup collapse. White: king h6, pawn h5 — textbook placement. Black: king g8, one step from the corner. White to move, and there is nothing to be done.
1.Kg6 Kh8 2.h6 Kg8 3.h7+ Kh8 and now every road ends the same way: 4.Kh6 (or any waiting try) is stalemate on the spot, while retreating the king lets Black shuttle between h8 and g8 forever — approach again and the same stalemate reappears. Compare this with a g-pawn: there White's king would step to the "other side" with Kf7, and the pawn would queen. The h-file has no other side. That is the entire theory of the draw: once the defending king reaches g8 or h8 (b8 or a8 against the a-pawn), the game is over. No zugzwang exists, because stalemate guards the corner, and stalemate-based defenses are immune to spare tempi — a point worth remembering from king and pawn vs king.
The Second Draw: The Attacker Boxed In
The rook pawn has a second, stranger drawing pattern: the attacking king trapped in front of its own pawn. It arises constantly from races in which White's king escorts the pawn all the way home and arrives first — normally the dream, here the tomb. White: king h8, pawn h7. Black: king f7, Black to move.
1...Kf8! and White has no legal move at all: g7 and g8 are covered by the black king, h7 by White's own pawn. Stalemate — with White the one stalemated, a rarity worth savoring. The defense is precise, though: only 1...Kf8 (and the return trip 2...Kf7 if White were free to shuffle) holds; wandering off with 1...Ke6? would free the white king to g7 and the pawn promotes. The practical rule: against a rook pawn, the defender draws either by reaching the corner or by imprisoning the attacking king on the rook file in front of its own pawn with this f7/f8 (c7/c8) shuffle. What Still Wins: The Race for g7
A rook pawn is not a dead pawn — it wins whenever the defender's king is too far away to establish either fortress. The key squares of an h-pawn are g7 and g8: if White's king gets there first, the corner belongs to the attacker and the geometry flips. White: king g6, pawn h5. Black: king e8, one file too far.
1.Kg7! claims h8 before Black can contest it, and the rest is a formality: 1...Ke7 2.h6 Ke6 3.h7 Kd6 4.h8=Q. Note how little margin there was: shift the black king one file closer to f8 in the starting position and 1...Kf8 arrives in time to build the box. When you evaluate a rook-pawn race at the board, do not count moves to the pawn — count moves to the corner, for both kings, using the same discipline as the square rule. Whoever wins the corner wins the evaluation.
The Wrong Bishop: A Whole Extra Piece That Does Not Help
The corner fortress is so robust that it survives the attacker being an entire piece up — provided it is the wrong piece. Add a bishop that does not control the promotion corner (the famous wrong bishop) and the draw stands. White: king g6, pawn h6, bishop e2 — a light-squared bishop, while h8 is a dark square. Black: king h8.
White can check, chase, and maneuver, but never evict the king from the corner the bishop cannot see: 1.Kf7 Kh7 2.Bd3+ Kh8 3.h7 is stalemate — and abandoning the pawn's defense with 2.Kf6 instead simply loses it to 2...Kxh6. Every regrouping runs into one of those two ends. This single geometric fact governs dozens of practical decisions long before the ending: which bishop to keep in a trade, which rook pawn to grab, whether "bishop and pawn up" is actually winning. Rook-Pawn Geometry Across the Endgame
The edge distorts every endgame it touches, and it always favors the defender. In rook endings there is no Lucena win with a rook pawn: the attacking king in the corner has no side to escape to, and against a rook pawn on the sixth the defender even has the dedicated Vancura position — details in rook and pawn vs rook. So build the habit I drill relentlessly: the moment a simplification points toward an a- or h-pawn, stop and name the corner. Ask which king reaches it first, ask what color the corner is if bishops remain, and only then choose your trade. Attackers should trade rook pawns away or keep a second pawn on the board; defenders should race for the corner with everything they have — arriving is the whole game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are rook-pawn endings drawn so often?
Because winning king-and-pawn technique depends on outflanking — going around the defending king on either side — and at the board's edge one side does not exist. The defender who reaches the corner is protected by stalemate, which no amount of maneuvering or spare tempi can break.
When does a rook pawn actually win?
When the defending king can reach neither fortress: too far from the corner to get to g8 (or b8), and unable to trap the attacking king in front of its own pawn. The attacker's king must reach g7 or g8 ahead of the defender; count both kings' distances to the corner to evaluate any race.
What is the wrong bishop?
A bishop that does not control the promotion square of its rook pawn — a light-squared bishop with an h-pawn queening on dark h8, for example. With the defending king in the corner the position is drawn despite the extra piece, because the bishop can never deliver the tempo-gaining evictions the win would need.
Does the corner defense need exact play?
The corner fortress itself is nearly effortless: shuffle between the corner and the adjacent square. The boxed-attacker draw is stricter — the defending king must hold exactly f7 and f8 (or c7/c8 against the a-pawn), and drifting one square away releases the attacking king and loses.
Should I trade into a rook-pawn ending when ahead?
Only after checking the corner race. As the stronger side, prefer keeping any non-rook pawn instead, or keep pieces on; as the defender, aim every liquidation at the a- or h-pawn structure, since it is the most drawish terrain on the board.
