Bishop vs Knight Endgame

Bishop versus knight is the most common minor-piece duel in chess, and its endgames are decided by the pawn structure, not by the pieces themselves. Open positions with pawns on both wings favor the bishop, whose long diagonals defend one flank while it operates on the other; blocked positions with play on a single wing — especially with pawns fixed on the bishop's color — favor the knight. Learn to ask the three structural questions below and you will evaluate these endgames in seconds.

I teach my students to stop asking "which piece is better?" in the abstract and start asking "which piece is better here?" — this duel is almost never decided by material, but by fit.

The Three Questions That Decide the Duel

Before anything else, look at the pawns and ask:

  1. Are there pawns on both wings? If yes, the bishop gains: it can influence both sides of the board from one square, while the knight needs three or four moves to cross from wing to wing. If all pawns sit on one wing, the knight's short stride stops being a handicap.
  2. Is the position open or blocked? Open diagonals are bishop highways. Fixed pawn chains are bishop walls — and knight playgrounds, because the knight jumps over everything and can occupy an outpost in front of a blocked pawn forever.
  3. Which color are the pawns fixed on? Pawns fixed on the bishop's own color make it a bad bishop: it bumps into its own pawns and cannot attack the enemy's, which sit safely on the other color. A knight has no such problem — it attacks squares of both colors on alternate moves.

Two answers out of three usually settle the evaluation. All three pointing the same way is close to a full extra pawn's worth of advantage for the favored side.

Why the Bishop Rules Open Boards and Distant Passers

The clearest demonstration of the bishop's strength is its behavior against a distant passed pawn — the exact situation that arises when play spans two wings. Watch a lone bishop neutralize an escorted passer from across the board. White: Kg1, Bg7. Black: Kb3, pawn a4. White to move — and this is a dead draw:

1.Bd4! takes the a1–h8 diagonal, and the game is over as a contest: the bishop covers the promotion square a1 and the entry square b2, so Black's king cannot even step in front of its own pawn to shepherd it home. After 1...a3 2.Kf2 a2 3.Ke2 Kc2 4.Be5 Kb1 5.Kd2 the pawn can only promote into the bishop's teeth: 5...a1=Q 6.Bxa1 and the draw is trivial. The bishop never moved more than once between duties.

Now give White a knight on the same square instead, in the same position — and White loses:

1.Nf5 a3 2.Kf2 a2 3.Ke3 a1=Q and the knight arrived two moves too late. Both minor pieces stood on g7; the bishop controlled a1 instantly, the knight needed four hops. Together the two verified results are the whole "two wings favor the bishop" rule in miniature: the bishop holds the far wing for free while the knight must physically travel.

The practical consequence: when you have the bishop, keep pawns on both wings and open the position. Many bishop-side wins are nothing more than a king march on one wing while the bishop babysits the other — a plan the knight side simply cannot copy.

When the Knight Is the Better Piece

Reverse every condition and the knight takes over. Here is the structural picture I show students first: a knight blockading a passed pawn on a square the bishop can never attack. White: Ke5, Bd3, pawn d5. Black: Kd7, Nd6. White to move:

White has an extra pawn and it means nothing — this position is a tablebase draw. The knight sits on d6, a dark square, and White's light-squared bishop will stare at it until the end of time without ever attacking it. The white king cannot evict it either: d6 is defended by the black king, and any king approach is met by the knight simply holding its post or trading itself for the pawn. This is the blockade in its purest form, and it illustrates the knight's unique gift: it fights on both colors, so it can always park on whichever color the enemy bishop does not own.

The knight's favorite scenarios follow from this:

  • All pawns on one wing. The knight's slowness never gets punished, and its ability to attack any pawn — light square or dark — becomes the only mobility that matters.
  • Fixed pawns on the enemy bishop's color. Now the bishop is bad twice over: walled in by its own pawns and unable to threaten anything. The knight hops between colors, targets the fixed pawns, and wins the resulting one-sided siege.
  • A stable central outpost. A knight on d5 or e5, protected by a pawn and unattackable by enemy pawns, is at least a bishop's equal anywhere and its superior in a blocked position.

When you have the knight, do the opposite of the bishop's plan: keep the position closed, fix enemy pawns on the enemy bishop's color, and trade off the wing where you are weaker so that all remaining play happens where your king and knight already stand.

Converting: Technique for Both Sides

With the bishop, up a pawn: put your pawns on the opposite color of your own bishop — they control the squares the bishop cannot, and they can never become targets for it being blocked. Advance your passer on the wing away from the kings; every tempo the knight spends catching it is a tempo your king uses to invade. Avoid trading into positions where all pawns end up on one wing; that trade converts your bishop from the better piece into the worse one. And remember that a well-timed bishop-for-knight trade into a won pawn endgame is often the cleanest conversion of all — but check the pawn ending before you commit, not after.

With the knight, defending: blockade first, counterattack second. Plant the knight in front of the passer on the color the bishop cannot attack, exactly as in the diagram above, and keep your king next to the knight so it cannot be levered away. If the position has two wings, hurry: use your king for one wing and the knight for the other before the play opens up. A knight that must chase a runner across the board, like the one on g7 above, is a knight that has already lost.

Both sides: pure bishop versus knight with no pawns is a trivial draw, so the defender hunts pawn trades and the stronger side preserves them. The Evaluation Habit

Strong players do not calculate these endgames from scratch — they pattern-match the structure against the three questions and play the plan that fits: "two wings, open board, my bishop — stretch the knight"; "one wing, blocked, pawns fixed on his bishop's color — my knight is a monster, trade nothing, invade." Read positions this way and the middlegame benefit arrives free: you will know, long before move thirty, which minor piece to keep in the coming trade — and when it is worth conceding the bishop pair to get the right single minor piece for the structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bishop worth more than a knight in the endgame?

On average, slightly — the bishop's long range shows best in simplified positions with pawns on both wings. But the average hides the truth: in blocked, one-wing positions with pawns fixed on the bishop's color, the knight is clearly the stronger piece. Structure decides, not the piece's nameplate.
