The Bishop Wall

First, the advance must always be supported — a bishop that steps up unprotected next to the enemy king is simply captured, the one way White can actually lose this endgame (bishop and king cannot mate, and with a bishop gone it is an insufficient material draw on the spot). Second, do not hunt the king with checks; the wall does the herding, and random checks let the king squirt back toward the center.
The Corner Dance
The finish deserves its own diagram, because the final three moves contain both the mating pattern and the endgame's only trap. Black's king is penned on a8/b8; White: king b6, bishops c3 and g4.
1.Bd4! is a pure waiting move — and the most instructive tempo move in the elementary mates. The king on a8 has exactly one legal reply. 1...Kb8 2.Be5+ — now the same dark-square diagonal comes with check — 2...Ka8 3.Bf3#, the light bishop closing the long diagonal while the dark bishop covers b8 and the king covers a7 and b7. The pattern generalizes: dark-squared bishop checks the king from b8 into the corner, light-squared bishop mates on the a8–h1 diagonal (or the mirror in any other corner). The two checks arrive on parallel diagonals, one square apart — the wall's final, smallest version.
The Stalemate Trap: Same Square, Wrong Moment
Return to the diagram above and play the natural-looking 1.Be5?? instead — heading for the very square that wins one move later. With the king still on a8, the bishop on e5 covers b8, the white king covers a7 and b7, and there is no check: stalemate, tablebase draw, full point gone. The winning move and the losing move differ only in timing: e5 must be occupied with check, which is exactly what the waiting move 1.Bd4 arranges by first forcing the king onto b8.
The general rule, identical in spirit to the queen mate's corner traps: when the defending king shuffles between two squares, never cover its current square's partner without giving check. Or in the one-second-per-move form — before every quiet move near the corner, confirm the defender still has a reply.
Speed and Perspective
Verified against the tablebase: the worst legal position takes nineteen moves (kings a1 and d2, bishops d1 and e7 — the bishops start hopelessly tangled), and normal positions run ten to fourteen, so the fifty-move rule is a non-issue with any technique at all. Two bishops are the easy member of the minor-piece mate family: the wall herds automatically, any corner works, and there is one trap rather than many.
