Two Knights vs King

Two knights against a lone king cannot force checkmate — the strangest fact in the elementary endgames, because the mate itself exists and is one careless move away throughout. The problem is a missing tempo: the knights can build the cage but can never pass the move, so the final position arrives as stalemate instead of mate. Stranger still, give the defender an extra pawn and the win often returns — the paradox mapped by Troitsky, whose famous line tells you exactly which pawns lose.

The Mate Exists — It Just Cannot Be Forced

First, dispose of a myth: two knights can checkmate. White king g6, knights d6 and e7, black king h8 — 1.Nf7 is mate, the knight on e7 covering g8 while the king covers g7 and h7. The tablebase scores it, and versions of it happen over the board when a defender wanders into the corner voluntarily.

What the tablebase also says is that Black is never obliged to cooperate. Play the same net against a defender who knows the one rule — stay out of the corner until forced, and when checked, step the right way — and the win evaporates at the last instant, every single time. Here is the failure in its purest form. White has everything: king g6, knights d7 and e5, enemy king already on h8.

1.Nf7+ looks like the moment — but after 1...Kg8 the position is stalemate: f8 covered by the knight on d7, f7 occupied with its neighbor h8 covered, g7 and h7 covered by the king, and no check on the board. Draw. Rewind and try to improve: to mate on h8, White needs the d7-knight to cover g8 and the e5-knight to check on f7 while the king sits on h8 — three conditions that need one extra White move at the critical instant. Any quiet knight move lets the king shuffle to g8 and back; and a knight is constitutionally unable to lose a tempo, because every knight move lands on the opposite color — it can never return to the same square in an odd number of moves. No waiting move, no zugzwang, no mate. This is exactly the resource that makes bishop and knight vs king a forced win — a bishop can lose a tempo along its diagonal, and that one capability is worth the entire half point. The verdict here is general: from any normal position, two knights versus king is a tablebase draw.

Over the board, still play a few safe moves of it — your opponent has to find the shuffle, and nothing you do risks anything. Just watch the fifty-move count and take the draw with grace.

The Pawn Paradox

Now the twist that delights every student: give Black a pawn and White's winning chances improve. The logic follows straight from the diagnosis above. White's problem was never force — it was that the stalemate defense kept rescuing Black at the moment the cage closed. With a black pawn on the board there is no stalemate: when the black king runs out of moves, the pawn must march. Those forced pawn moves are exactly the tempi the knights could not generate themselves. Zugzwang, dead in the pawnless ending, comes back to life.

The technique writes itself from that insight. One knight blockades the pawn — the same front-of-the-pawn posting that decides knight vs pawn endings — both stopping it and holding it available as a tempo dispenser. King and the other knight then herd the black king into a corner exactly as if the position were pawnless. At the very end, when the old ending would have collapsed into stalemate, White releases the pawn at the calculated moment: Black spends his moves pushing it while the second knight completes the mating net.

The Troitsky Line

How advanced may the pawn be? Alexei Troitsky's monumental analysis answered with a line of squares: a4, b6, c5, d4, e4, f5, g6, h4. If the black pawn is securely blockaded by a knight on or before that line — no further advanced — the position is winning for White no matter where the kings start. Past the line, the pawn is far enough that Black can often shed it at a moment that breaks the net, and the game is drawn with correct defense.

A summary is all a practical player needs, plus one honest warning: many Troitsky wins are enormously long. Tablebases confirm forced mates in this material that need far more than fifty moves — one blockade-on-a4 position I checked gives mate in ninety-one — so a win that is real on the board can still be a draw under the fifty-move rule. The wins near the kingside end of the line, with the defender's king already cornered, are the ones short enough to matter.

Here is one such position, tablebase-verified as a win in thirty-five moves from the diagram: black pawn on h4 blockaded by the knight on h3 — exactly on the Troitsky line — kings on g8 and g6.

The Finish: Releasing the Pawn on Schedule

Fast-forward that win to its final phase, because the last seven moves teach the whole concept. White: king f6, knights e3 and h3 (still blockading); Black: king h5, pawn h4.

1.Nf4+ Kh6 2.Ng4+! The blockading knight abandons its post — the move that would be unthinkable without counting, because the pawn is now free to run. But count: the pawn needs three moves to promote; White's mating net needs exactly that long, and Black's pawn moves replace the stalemate. 2...Kh7 3.Kf7 h3 — with the king out of moves, the pawn must spend the tempo; in the pawnless ending this position would already be stalemate. 4.Ng6 h2 5.Nf8+ Kh8 6.Ne5 h1=Q — Black promotes with check nowhere in sight — 7.Neg6#, the knights and king covering every square around h8, one move ahead of the new queen — which watches from h1, a spectator to the only elementary mate that routinely arrives the move after the defender queens.

That race — mate against promotion, decided by one tempo — is why the Troitsky line exists: it marks precisely how much head start the pawn can have before the race flips.
