Opposite-Colored Bishop Endgames

Opposite-colored bishop endgames are the great equalizers of chess: because each bishop lives on squares the other can never touch, the defender can build a blockade the attacker's pieces are physically unable to challenge, and even a two-pawn advantage is often not enough to win. The drawing method is concrete — plant the king in front of one pawn on the color your bishop does not need, and let the bishop hold the other. The winning exception is equally concrete: passed pawns far apart on the two wings overload the defense, and the tablebase confirms both results below.

Every serious player must hold two opposite truths about these endgames at once. Pure opposite-colored bishop endings are the most drawish in chess — and with other pieces still on the board, opposite-colored bishops famously favor the attacker. Why an Extra Pawn (or Two) So Often Fails

A passed pawn must cross squares of both colors on its way to promotion. The attacker's bishop can escort it across squares of one color only; the squares of the other color must be won by the king or conceded by the defense. And here is the geometric catch: the defender parks his king or bishop on exactly those squares — the ones the attacking bishop can never attack. A defending king on such a square can be approached but never evicted, because the attacker is effectively playing a piece down on that color complex. Material counts for nothing on squares your bishop cannot see.

That is the entire theory in one paragraph. Everything below is the craft of applying it: where the blockade goes, which extra-pawn configurations still fail against it, and which ones break it.

Building the Blockade: Two Connected Pawns Held Forever

Connected passed pawns — the configuration that wins almost everything else in chess — meet their match here. White: Kg5, Bc3, pawns e5 and f4. Black: Ke6, Be4. White is two clean pawns up, and the position is a tablebase draw:

Look at the division of labor, because this is the fortress blueprint for the whole chapter:

  • The black king stands on e6 — a light square, in front of the e-pawn. White's dark-squared bishop can never attack it, and the white king can never approach it: the entry squares d5, f5, and even g6 are all covered by the bishop on e4.
  • The black bishop on e4 covers f5, so the f-pawn can never advance safely, and it simultaneously guards the king's flank.

White's only way to change the structure is 1.f5+, and after 1...Bxf5 the bishop simply replaces itself as the blockader: 2.Bb4 Bb1 3.Kg4 Bf5+ 4.Kg5 Be4 and nothing has changed — one pawn is gone, the king still owns e6, and the reduced ending is the standard single-pawn draw. This is the key defensive insight: the blockade is a system of squares, not a set of pieces. As long as king and bishop cover the pawn's next light square and the king's entry squares, the defender can shuffle forever.

The construction rules when you are defending: put your king in front of the pawns on the color your opponent's bishop does not control, put your bishop where it stops the other pawn and covers your king's flank, and then do nothing — the blockade, once built, runs without fuel. The single biggest defensive error is abandoning the blockade square to grab a pawn or give a check; the second biggest is blockading with the bishop a pawn the king could hold, wasting the one piece that must watch the rest of the board.

Two Pawns Up, Close Together: Still a Draw

The blockade logic extends beyond connected pawns. Passers separated by just one file are also generally held, because one blockade system covers both. A verified example — White: Ke4, Bd2, pawns c5 and e5; Black: Kd7, Be8 — is a tablebase draw:

The black king on d7 watches both pawns' advance squares at once — c6, d6-adjacent entries, and e6 are all within its reach, and the ones that matter are colors the white bishop cannot fight for. The bishop merely waits. Push either pawn and the king blockades it dead; bring the white king around either side and it finds every entry square covered. The rule of thumb the tablebase keeps confirming: connected passers or passers one file apart are normally drawn; the defense only starts to crack when the pawns pull far enough apart that one king cannot serve both.

Which brings us to the exception the attacker lives for.

The Winning Exception: Passers on Two Wings

Stretch the same material across the board and the fortress collapses. White: Ke4, Bd2, pawns on c5 and g5. Black: Kc6, Be6. The pawns are now three files apart — and White wins, tablebase-exact:

1.Bb4! first secures the c-pawn — now the black king is chained to it forever. Then White's king simply walks to the other wing: 1...Ba2 2.Ke5 Bb1 3.Kf6 Ba2 4.g6 Kd7 5.Kg7 Bb1 6.Kf7 Ba2+ 7.Kf8 Bb1 8.g7 Ba2 9.g8=Q! Bxg8 10.Kxg8 and the point of the whole operation appears: the bishop was the only piece stopping the g-pawn, so the pawn is exchanged for the bishop — and the c-pawn, which the bishop can no longer watch and the king never could leave, queens by itself.

This is the overload mechanism: the defending king holds one pawn, the defending bishop holds the other, and the attacking king attacks the bishop's pawn — the one defender that can be harassed. The defending king cannot come help without releasing his own pawn. The wider the pawns, the more decisive this is; as they get closer, the defending king starts covering both and we slide back into the fortress. This is also why the attacker in an opposite-colored bishop endgame should treasure pawns on both wings, keep his own passed pawns as far apart as possible, and meet every pawn trade offer with one question: does this trade bring the remaining pawns closer together?

Practical Play: Both Sides of the Drawing Tendency

Defending down material: steer for the pure opposite-colored bishop ending — it is the best drawing chance in chess. Trade rooks and knights, not pawns... with one crucial refinement: trade the pawns that are far from your blockade, keep the structure compact, and build the fortress before the enemy king arrives. Even a clean two pawns down, you have real chances, as the positions above prove. And once the fortress stands, stop calculating and shuffle — the attacker's only hope is that you leave it voluntarily, usually via zugzwang tricks or a tempting pawn grab.

Attacking with the extra pawn(s): first, do not simplify into the pure ending while your pawns are close together — check the resulting structure against the blockade test before every trade. Keep a second pair of pieces on the board if you can; with rooks on, opposite-colored bishops help the attacker, since the defender's bishop cannot help against threats on the other color. Second, play on both wings: create the second passer far from the first, in the spirit of the two weaknesses principle. Third, remember the sibling endgame: if the bishops were the same color, none of this drawing machinery would exist — which is why same-colored bishop endgames convert an extra pawn so much more often, and why the choice of which minor piece trade to allow in the late middlegame is often the real winning or drawing move.
