So before each trade, name the ending you are heading toward and evaluate it. Not "I'm up a pawn, trades are good," but "after the rooks come off this is a knight versus bad bishop ending with my king closer — won." The trade is merely the door; the evaluation belongs to the room behind it.

Auto-recapturing and auto-accepting. Taking back instantly, or accepting every offered trade as if declining were impolite. Each capture is a full decision: which piece recaptures, whether an in-between move exists, whether the trade serves your position at all.
Trading your active pieces. Players exchange whatever the opponent offers and end up holding a collection of spectators while the opponent kept the workers. Trade your worst-placed piece, keep your best — the opponent is trying to do exactly the opposite.
Simplifying while worse. Trading pieces when behind removes your own counterplay and walks the game toward the ending your opponent wants. The worse your position, the more you should value complexity — swindles live in complications, never in clean technique.
