Pawn Race
A pawn race is the endgame's version of a sprint: both sides push passed pawns toward promotion at the same time, and neither king can — or chooses to — stop the opponent's runner. Races are decided by arithmetic rather than judgment: you count the moves each pawn needs, note whose turn it is, and check whether either pawn promotes with check. The margin is usually a single move, which is why counting technique separates the players who convert these endings from the players who guess.
What Is a Pawn Race?
Most endgames are slow arguments about squares and weaknesses. A pawn race is different: from the moment both sides commit to pushing, nearly every move is forced, and the result is already sitting in the position waiting to be counted. "White's pawn needs three moves, Black's needs three, White moves first" — that one sentence often contains the entire evaluation of the game.
Races appear when the kings have been dragged to opposite wings, when both sides have manufactured passers on opposite flanks, or when a defending king realizes it cannot catch the enemy pawn and understands that its only chance is to abandon defense and push its own. At that moment the position changes character completely: strategy is over and bookkeeping begins. Counting: Win the Race Before You Run It
Here is the discipline I drill until it is automatic. Before you touch a pawn, run this four-step count:
- Count your pawn's moves to promotion. Mind the details: a pawn still on its starting square needs one move fewer than it looks, thanks to the double step; a capture on the way counts as a move; and confirm the road is actually clear — your own king loitering on the promotion square has ruined more races than any defensive resource ever will.
- Count your opponent's pawn the same way. Same care, same details. Most counting errors happen on the opponent's side of the board, because we count our own dreams precisely and our opponent's lazily.
- Note whose move it is. In an equal count, the side to move promotes first. Half of all races reduce to exactly this observation.
- If the counts are level or one apart, check the finish line. Does either pawn promote with check? What do the new queens see from their promotion squares? These two questions are the subject of the next sections.
The whole procedure takes ten seconds, and it is pure calculation of the friendliest kind: no branching, no surprises, just straight lines. That is also why races are unforgiving — there is no "unclear" to hide behind. A tempo is the entire currency of a race. You cannot earn one back later; you can only fail to waste one now. Count before you commit your king to the other wing, not after, because once both sides have pushed a pawn there is rarely a way to change your mind.
The One-Tempo Margin
Let me show you how thin the margins are. White: king b2, pawn a5. Black: king g7, pawn h4. Neither king stands in the square of the enemy pawn — the square rule tells us that in one glance — so this is a pure race. Count: the a-pawn needs three moves (a6, a7, a8), the h-pawn needs three (h3, h2, h1). Dead level. So the side to move wins? Almost — watch how.
With White to move: 1.a6 h3 2.a7 h2 3.a8=Q, and Black's pawn stands one square from glory, forever. The new queen on a8 looks straight down the a8-h1 diagonal at Black's promotion square: 3...h1=Q loses the queen instantly to 4.Qxh1, and otherwise White simply collects the pawn and wins. Note the geometric gift: the two corner promotion squares, a8 and h1, share the long diagonal. In races between a-pawns and h-pawns this motif appears constantly — the first queen born often controls the birthplace of the second.
Now hand the same position to Black to move, and everything flips like a mirror: 1...h3 2.a6 h2 3.a7 h1=Q, and it is the black queen on h1 that surveys the long diagonal and forbids a8 forever. One tempo swings the evaluation from winning to losing — not to a draw, but through it, all the way to the other side. When I say endgames are decided by one-tempo margins, this is not a figure of speech. It is the literal scoreboard of a race.
Queening With Check
When the count is one tempo against you, there is a classical way to get the refund: promote with check. A check freezes the opponent's pawn for a move — he must attend to his king — so a promotion with check is effectively worth two tempi.
Example. White: king b1, pawn a5. Black: king f3, pawn g4. White to move; both pawns need three moves. So far this looks like the previous example, but Black's king placement changes everything: 1.a6 g3 2.a7 g2 3.a8=Q+! The black king on f3 stands on the a8-f3 diagonal, so the queen arrives with check, and Black never gets to play ...g1=Q. After 3...Kf2, defending the promotion square, comes 4.Qa7+ — check again, down the a7-g1 diagonal, x-raying the very square the pawn dreams of. The standard winning ladder follows: White checks, forces the king in front of its own pawn on g1, uses the free move to bring his king a step closer, and repeats. A knight pawn on the second rank loses this ending; only rook and bishop pawns hold the famous draws based on stalemate tricks in the corner.
And here is the twist I show every student, because it teaches the whole lesson at once: put the black king on f5 instead of f3. Now 3.a8=Q arrives without check — and Black replies 3...g1=Q+, check to the white king on b1 along the first rank. The extra tempo changes hands at the finish line, and it is Black who takes over.
So the rule is: before racing, examine both promotion squares and both kings. Trace the rank, file, and diagonals radiating from each queening square and see whether an enemy king sits on one of them. Kings on the first or eighth rank and kings near the long diagonals are check magnets. This is part of the count, not an afterthought.
The Race After the Race
Both sides queen — and the game is decided in the next two moves more often than you would believe. New queens are born unprotected and far from their kings, which makes them ideal targets.
The first weapon is the first check. A check drives the enemy king, and kings under fire have a way of stepping onto the same line as their own queen — at which point a skewer ends the race two moves after it seemed drawn. In the corner races above, the motif is even cruder: both new queens stand on the a8-h1 diagonal, unprotected, and whoever moves simply takes the other. When you count a race as "we both promote," you have not finished counting. Extend the line two moves past the second promotion and hunt for every check on the board.
The defender has resources of his own. If you win the race but your opponent queens right after, his most common saving idea is perpetual check — a queen with open lines to your king can often force the draw even three pawns down, so part of racing well is asking where your king will hide once the queens appear. My practical advice: the moment you see a race coming, calculate to the end of the checks, not to the promotions. "And we both queen" is where the analysis starts, not where it stops.
To Race or to Stop the Runner
Not every position with two passed pawns should become a race. You always have three candidate plans: run, catch, or blockade — and the count decides between them.
Run the square rule on the enemy pawn first. If your king catches it while your own pawn still promotes, you are not in a race at all; you are just winning. If your king cannot catch it, count the race honestly. Win the count and the choice is made for you: push, and do not insert a single "useful" extra move — every quiet move you add is a tempo, and we established what one tempo does. Lose the count and you must look for the exits: a blockading piece, a defensive sacrifice for the pawn, or a perpetual with the queen you will still get one move too late.
It is also worth knowing where races come from, so you can steer toward or away from them a dozen moves in advance. The classic source is the pawn majority: a healthy three-versus-two on the wing manufactures the passed pawn that later runs.
