Mastering Basic Rook Endgames

by Adrian Mikhalchishin

No type of ending turns up at the board more often than the rook ending — upwards of 60% of endgames feature rooks, largely because the rooks are usually the last pieces to join the fight. This book is Part 6 of a FIDE-approved endgame manual, the first of its kind, produced by three FIDE Senior Trainers and grandmasters: Adrian Mikhalchishin, Efstratios Grivas and Csaba Balogh. It lays the groundwork for rook play: rook against pawns, rook-and-pawn endings with a single pawn, useful manoeuvres, the technical headaches of the edge pawn and rook against two pawns. Later chapters turn from positions to methods — rook activity and placement, exploiting weaknesses, tactics, stalemate, zugzwang, transitions into pawn and rook endings — and finish with a chapter on typical mistakes.
