The other half of the question is worth far more: how do you find strong moves yourself, at the board, with the clock running and no computer in sight? That is the skill that actually wins games, and it is trainable, because behind every grandmaster's "intuition" sits a concrete thinking method. In my coaching I teach it as a six-step algorithm, and I use the same algorithm in my own tournament games. The Grandmaster Move-Finding Algorithm
Strong players do not stare at the board hoping a move will suggest itself. They run a sequence, in order, on nearly every move. Here it is.
Step 1: Ask what your opponent's last move changed. Every move alters the position — it attacks something new, abandons the defense of something old, opens a line, or weakens a square. Before you think about your own ideas, name the change out loud in your head: "The knight now attacks my bishop and eyes d5, and it no longer defends e5." Most amateur losses do not come from failing to find brilliant moves; they come from answering a question the position is not asking. If their move created a threat, dealing with it — or proving you can ignore it — comes before everything else.
Step 2: Scan the forcing moves — checks, captures, threats, in that order. Forcing moves demand a specific reply, which makes them easy to calculate and dangerous to miss. List every check you can give, every capture you can make, and every direct threat you can create — even the ones that look absurd, because "absurd" checks and captures are where combinations hide. If a forcing sequence wins material or mates, you are done. Step 3: Choose candidate moves — two to four, never just one. This is the step amateurs skip and masters never do. Instead of falling in love with the first reasonable move you see, deliberately list your candidate moves: the forcing moves that survived step 2, plus the natural positional options — improving a piece, seizing a file, hitting a weakness. One candidate means you are not choosing a move, you are rationalizing one.
Step 4: Calculate the critical lines until the position goes quiet. For each serious candidate, play out the most testing reply in your head — not the reply you hope for — and follow the line until it reaches a quiet position: no hanging pieces, no checks, no immediate captures. Stopping your calculation in the middle of a tactical storm is how "I calculated it!" turns into "I lost a piece."
Step 5: Evaluate the endpoints. Calculation without evaluation is just moving pieces in your imagination. At the end of each line, judge the resulting position on the four classic factors: material (counted with sane piece values, remembering that activity can outweigh a pawn), piece activity, pawn structure, and king safety. The candidate whose endpoint you evaluate best becomes your intended move — the question is never "is this move good?" but "is this endpoint better than the others?"
Step 6: Blunder-check, then commit. Before your hand touches the piece, one final pass: after my intended move, what are my opponent's checks, captures, and threats? Does anything hang? Is my back rank safe? This takes fifteen seconds and it is the cheapest insurance in chess. Then play the move with conviction. Second-guessing a properly checked decision burns clock time and confidence for nothing.
That is the whole algorithm. It sounds slow written out, but with practice steps 1, 2, and 6 compress into seconds, and you spend your real time where it belongs — on candidates, calculation, and evaluation.
What "Best Move" Actually Means
Here is something the engine will not tell you: the objectively best move and the best move for you to play are not always the same move.
The engine's best move is the one that maximizes the evaluation against perfect defense. The practical best move is the one that maximizes your chances of winning against the human in front of you, given your understanding, your time on the clock, and your ability to follow up. A move that is +0.3 better according to the engine, but leads to a position whose plans you do not understand, is usually worse for you than a slightly inferior move whose ideas you know cold. When I train students, I tell them: play the move you can explain.
There is also the old debate about "playing the man versus playing the board." Let me treat it honestly. Deliberately playing unsound moves because your opponent is lower-rated is a bad habit that corrupts your judgment. In a balanced, quiet middlegame there may be five moves of nearly identical value, and agonizing over which is "best" is a waste of clock. What you need in those moments is not a move but a plan, and two default questions generate one reliably.
First: which of my pieces is doing the least, and how do I improve it? This is the core habit of positional play — find your worst piece and give it a better job. A knight rerouted to a strong square, a rook doubled behind a coming advance, a bishop freed from its own pawns: these "small" moves are how winning positions are built out of equal ones.
Second: what does my pawn structure want? Closed, maneuvering positions are the opposite. With the pawn chains locked, forcing moves rarely exist, and the game is about preparing the right break and rerouting pieces to their best squares — sometimes over five or six moves. Calculation matters less; planning and patience matter more.
Endgames change the priorities completely. The endgame rewards two things above almost everything else: an active king — the king becomes a fighting piece the moment queens leave the board — and the creation and escort of a passed pawn. If you are drifting in an ending, "activate the king" and "make a passer" are the best-move generators nine times out of ten.
Only Moves: Find the Resource or Resign
Some positions contain exactly one move that does not lose — defensive resources, forced recaptures, the single square that escapes the mating net. These "only move" moments are where the algorithm earns its keep, because a lazy threat scan misses them and the game ends on the spot.
When you are worse, the discipline changes: stop looking for good moves and start looking for the move that survives. Great defenders assume a saving resource exists and hunt for it — perpetual checks, fortress setups, stalemate tricks, counterattacks that arrive one tempo in time. Some of the most famous half-points in chess history are pure swindles, rescued from dead-lost positions by a player who kept asking "what is my one chance?" long after resignation looked reasonable.
The Calculator Paradox: Why Engine Dependence Stunts Growth
